Oh, yeah, I remember now, when you evolve and your entire species eggs to the new form.
It’s amazing that Spore was a good game when in every possible individual respect it was oversimplified, conceptually poor, and completely inaccurate to real life.

Guess that’s what happens when your game has the quality of a single game but over 6 parts.
My brother has repeatedly compared Spore to 6 minigames loosely tied together, which is basically true. They have some connections - mainly the mouthpart, which you pick in Cell stage and which modifies your food source in Creature and Tribal, and then your Space stage civilisation type, which is determined by your dominant behavior in each stage. Nobody likes Space stage, though.
…It’s going to be difficult to not railroad the player in the later stages. You’re going to see an exponential growth of possibilities, won’t you?

I thought it was the most popular because it was the most diverse and “finished” one
And also that most hated stage was tribal stage where literally nothing interesting ever happens

Perhaps thriveuser meant space stage without the GA DLC?
I’ve not really been exposed much to Spore, and I wasn’t even aware of GA until, like, yesterday or something when I got sent to the wiki by someone. I was just kinda guessing, I think? Unsure of where I got this info from. I was never really into Spore. Wanted it as a kid, I think, but never got it. So yeah, I was probably just wrong about Space stage.

Is Spore still the most popular “evolution game” out there or has it’s fame faded away by now?
Spore’s… old. I’d hazard a guess that it’s still ‘popular’, but not popular in the sense that current games are popular. It’s more of a slow-burn popularity. It’s still culturally present, but it’s not very relevant anymore, and I can’t imagine there’s many new sales, or things happening in the community. I wonder if it still has servers running.

All it’s “successor” games to this point have never achieved even a fraction of it’s popularity…
Thrive has a good chance, but it’s got two main issues:
Thrive is not managed by a big company like EA. It doesn’t have a marketing budget. There’s half a dozen active people on this forum, two of which are you and me, and one of which is a dev.
Thrive’s dev time has been incredibly long. And it will continue to be incredibly long. Long dev time is never good for a game; the project could stall, end prematurely, go through repeated engine switches (slowing it down further), or run into serious issues due to turnover in devs or due to very inconsistent ages of internal parts.
Thrive’s a very ambitious project with a very small dev team. It has the potential to be, if not more popular than Spore, still a great achievement, but… well, I wouldn’t be surprised if it never clears Aware.

Even then it would remain the best spot to continue on from, as it’s an open source project. If the current devteam vanished, an another one could form.
