Doesn’t the Statolith/Statocyte/Otolith/Müller Vesicle (located in the inner ear in vertebrates) tell whether you are moving up, down, or a different direction? The eyespot would certainly tell you there is light over there, but not if that light is coming from above, sideways, or reflecting off a surface below you, if I understand it correctly.

Yeah, you could only use it to tell night from day probs. Which isn’t very useful now when that ability is a default one.
