Going to try the automated server updates for the first time now. Hopefully it works the first try.

Server maintenance that was attempted has failed. Oh no! Hopefully an admin is around soon to fix things…

“starting at 12:00 GMT”
Wasn’t 12:00 GMT 3 hours ago?

It was, I guess I should have told you first to expect the unexpected on this first run. In the future it will run on an automated schedule at the right time (hopefully, I calculated it right, but we’ll see in April if it hits at the right hour).

Though I guess I could in theory make the script calculate the right hour for display… I guess I didn’t think of that.

Why is it that the test sessions disable the github/dev forum feed and latest announcement on the forum’s main page? Is this just what the script used for the automatic updating does and there’s no further reason?

It’s the standard discourse page notice. You can check how it looks on the dev forums.

I’m not actually sure why it goes over the top of the feed, but at least that makes it very visible. As usual it’s been years since anyone has helped me with the forum theme CSS so I don’t expect that quirk to get fixed.

Okay, that’s not good… let’s do some adjustments and try again.

Yeah I’ve noticed it’s been late

Server maintenance is starting in 1 hour. Various services will be unavailable for 15-30 minutes.

Edit: Updates have been completed successfully.

Happy with the new automatically calculated downtime indicator?

Seems to be working correctly, hopefully it won’t fail again, we’ll see in an hour.

Edit: Is it late again yet?

It just succeeded. What do you mean by late?

The posted message is only updated once the updates fail or all succeed. And there’s a bunch of extra updates to install after the forums so it takes quite a while to finish even once the forums are online.

The forum didn’t go down so I assumed it failed but I suppose this isn’t going to happen every time an update is installed.

The forum did go down (the forum server has been up for 2 and a half hours, so it has been down that much time ago), but you may have missed it as the downtime would have been just a few minutes for the forums.

It doesn’t take that long for the server hosting the forums specifically to reboot and get the Discourse software back up and running. The updating and restarting of all of our stuff is overall what makes things take a while.

I’ve noticed the feed and stuff also disappears when going back to the home page from a different forum page (most notably threads/topics)

I noticed that bug all the way back when I implemented the feed, but I think that’s a reasonable bug to have and one that I’m not even sure would be easy to fix. So again it might take hours of my time to track down and as nobody else offers to do technical work on the forums, it’s unlikely to be ever done.

Looks like it is finally the end of the road for Legal Tools Plugin - Plugin - Discourse Meta so I need to remove that plugin to get some user info pages working.

So I need to rebuild the site image which means about 30 or so minutes of downtime. I’ll start the build in 5 minutes.

Edit: it is done and user profile pages should work fully again!
