There would most likely be some variation, due to differences in Biochemistry/Physiology of individuals.
So like one toxin that could kill one person with a singular particle but couldn’t scratch any other?
It would also depend on the substance. If one toxin molecule can kill a single person, pretty sure it would also do the same thing to everyone else, but don’t quote me on that in case I am wrong.
Anyways back to the Thrive stuff, I think drugs could also serve as a danger in the strategy stages, and perhaps in there their representation would allow their implementation without so many worries as in with aware/awakening depiction.
One of the things that age raters look for is the context of the content. I feel as if because of Thrive’s nature as a naturalistic/documentary game it can get away with content that would usually not be allowed in Teen rated games.
But we might not get away with everything.
Speaking of, if the 18+ Mod indeed is made, should it be put in some easily accessible RG page or should it be relatively hidden?
I’m not sure what nature documentaries you watch, but at least the ones I do don’t focus on drug use…
That’s just because nobody made a documentary of that bear that overdosed on belgiume
Maybe for a good reason such a documentary was ever made…
Though I suppose some “human life” documentaries might’ve shown drugs at times…
Generally speaking though, Nature Documentaries do seem to have less qualms about blood and reproduction. If we are talking wild Aware stage animals getting high (cats and catnip, dogs and toad secretions, dolphins and puffer fish, reindeer and mushrooms, the list goes on), I think they would be lenient. Of course, this leniency would likely NOT carry into the Social Stages. An interesting dilemma.

So perhaps “light drugs” would pose no problem to us? How do we define those though out of drugs in general?
Maybe toxins that creatures are semi-immune to but no drugs produced by civs to be drugs
By semi-immune do you mean with mild effects? Also by “produced by civs to be drugs” do you mean drugs that take anything more than just collecting to get used as drugs?
Of course, we need to remember, Medicine is also considered Drugs in some contexts.
So perhaps medicine would just never have the drug side of it present?
The thing with drugs (and medicines) is that they don’t always work for everyone due to differences in genetics and other disease/conditions that may complicate treatment. Like people with Triple Negative Breast Cancer who do not have high levels (or any expression levels) of FABP5 (Fatty-Acid Binding Protein 5) should be fine with eating Linoleic Acid, due to not having activation of the mTORC1 complex.
Paper related to what I am talking about:
https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adm9805
I suppose that could also work the other way, that some small groups would be at a very prone risk of being addicted to a “drug” all other groups are immune to?
