The underwater volcano off the coast of southern Tartarus erupts, boiling the nearby water and animals and causing lava to flow over the seafloor where it quickly solidifies but not before killing countless animals that couldn’t escape.

Somewhere off the east coast of Tartarus, the winds are picking up and the clouds are starting to rotate above the sea. The cloud burst with rain, peppering the water.

There is much algae to be eaten that cover the rocks like a carpet along with fronds of seaweed swaying from their anchors with the tide so you continue grazing peacefully. Waves ripple the surface above. The tide starts moving out to sea and the water level starts dropping accordingly so you keep moving - while grazing - to remain underwater. A few weeks later, you are found in an area surrounded by loose rubble with algae springing from gaps beneath it. A blue, worm-like, tentacled Farynxoskulus [Springblooms] lays atop a rock. Waves continue to ripple overhead in the clear, blue saltwater. The shore is in one direction and the rubble eventually ends in the other direction, leading to a plain. There are a couple of many-legged Pultrypa [Jellyfishmon] - arthropods with lobes on the elbows of their legs and with claws - here and you sense more chemically moving in. The wind picks up suddenly, causing the waves to increase greatly in size as rain batters the surface. (3 + 1)

Following this scent by walking a short way across the seabed, you bump into the source and find it motionless. You tear into the fresh carcass with your mandibles and chela, getting a good meal. After a long time of growing and moulting in the cold, you are now a juvenile. The water has not changed from being pitch black and cold. All you can sense is the smell of several Masticephalus above you in the water and Gorgonia magnapolypa ‘soft corals’ and Myostila ‘sea anemone’ along the seafloor. (6)

Placeholder name evolved from Pholgnathus lancus and is another arthropod with six pairs of appendages, including steering arms and claws. It has the distinctive keratin rostrum, stuck between two antennae. This particular species inhabits the depths where, at the time of its evolution, it is the most complex species about. It feeds on the soft, sessile animals there, like sponges and sea anemones, crawling across the cold, dark ocean floor following smells with its antennae. To live in this environment, it has had to lose its swim bladder - as well as make some chemical changes - so it spends most of its time walking unlike its relatives which spent an equal time walking and swimming. It has no predators here which might be why it’s lost it’s foul fluid glands. However, food is harder to find and finding a mate is particularly troublesome, especially as this species only produces half the amount of eggs as its predecessors.

Two chelipeds with weak claws are held at the front of the body, and behind these paddle-like steering arms, and there are four pairs of legs. Internal Features: Each cell in the body contains a relatively small number of piezolytes. Aquatic spiracles, one on each side behind the head lead from the outside to the inside. One year later, you are still swimming about through late summer, warm water. The visibility is quite murky. You survived through the cool, dark period of the year. You are exhausted having recently failed a hunt. You are close to the shore, surrounded by rocks, with the surf passing overhead. The water is full of Masticephalus and Elinopterus. Somewhere over the rocks, you smell a Macromorphii crawling about. Away from the shore, the rocks give way to a clearing you can see. (4 + 1)

A small proto-fish, this species has different types of scale to its predecessor; instead of being brittle yet heavy, they are flexible and light; instead of covering just the tail, the scales go up to where the head begins. The scales can even be shed when attacked to distract or lose an enemy and are quickly regrown. Interestingly, the hatchlings are born without scales and are developed when the reach the juvenile stage.

Through the wreckage of the beach and the cloudy water appears an adult female Diplopygus, heading for shore. The Diplopygus walks up to the shallows right next to you, so you barely have to move. You successfully reproduce after she produces eggs onto the seafloor. The suspended debris has been washed away so the hot water is clear again. Loose rocks from the rockfall still cover the seafloor but your eggs have drifted away into the sea. The surf passes overhead. Another female Diplopygus enters the area, followed by a male. The last female has wandered off to the side. A Pultrypa is laying motionless in the surf, except for where the lapping waves make it bob around. A Salcaedis [Agenttine] - a clawed arthropod with many legs - grazes on the algae and a blue, worm-like, tentacled Farynxoskulus [Springblooms] filters from a rock. Diplopygus ramstirpes

An arthropod species with legs that become lobes for swimming and dangerous chelipeds. It is a predator and hunts some of the bigger animals around. It lives in tropical seas, oceans and estuaries as the apex predator and the largest arthropod to exist so far. Diplopygus differs from its predecessors, on top of being much bigger, by having a three-chambered heart pumping a double circulatory system. It also has a faster hyponome and ends in a pair of fan tail lobes. Furthermore, it has a slightly better brain and buries its eggs with food. Cannibalism is also relatively rare.

External Features: It has a cylindrical body which has a calcified, calcite exoskeleton in fourteen plates with joint tissue in between. The skin underneath has sandy melanin pigmentation on top and white melanin pigmentation underneath. One pair of legs have chela on the end. In front of the circular mouth is a mandible. Around the mouth are a few chemoreceptors. On either side of the head is a camera eye with calcite lens that changes shape and has no blind spot and a typical apposition compound eye, which both contain blue and green cone cells. Not including the chelipeds, it has four pairs of normal legs, one to a segment, that have a large paddle on the outer side. When swimming, these are folded in to give the effect of a continuous lobe halfway along the body. Behind that is five pairs of biramous, paddle-lined swimmerets, one to a segment. The rear of the body has two fan tail lobes and below that a hyponome. Males in the mating season have a series of blue stripes on their limbs, unique to the species.
Internal Features: The body is segmented and contains fourteen segments. Spiracles lead to aquatic trachae. Blood vessels travel past every cell, carrying blue blood caused by hemocyanin, and the double circuit has a three-chambered heart. An anti-freeze xylomannan fatty acid and polysaccharide is in the blood. The body is supported by a system of muscles. It has a sex-appropriate gonad and a large protonephridium. There is a enclosed, one-chambered swim bladder in the dorsal side. There is a stomach and coiled intestines. A gland releases a foul fluid into the body fluids. Ganglia in the head lead into a dual dorsal nerve cord that has many nerves branching off. A cerebrum has memory neurons.

You are poised on a rock, with your tentacles hanging over the edge. The motion of the surf above brings large amounts of food particles drifting by. Loose rocks cover this area. There are a couple of many-legged Pultrypa [Jellyfishmon] - arthropods with lobes on the elbows of their legs and with claws - here and you sense more chemically moving in. Blurrily, you can see a Salcaedis [Agenttine] - a clawed arthropod with many legs - clambering over the rubble grazing on algae. This is a predatory proto-fish that lives in the Temperate Ocean of the Southern Hemisphere. It’s black, has bioluminescent spots all over it and sharp, venomous fangs. It lives in loose shoals. Inolarynx has pharyngeal muscles around the mouth and throat that allow it to create a buccal pump that draws water past the gills. It also sucks in organisms from the water. When it gets too close you start to move out to attack it but when you are halfway there a Tromaktikes [PositiveTower] - a blue exoskeleton-bearing animal powered by lobes - materialises out of the gloom and snatches away the prize, leaving only the cloud of gravel kicked up where the Gempliaori had been. You chase after the newcomer but lose it in the murk becoming exhuasted having pursued it for nothing. You cannot see the ditch. You remain in murky, warm freshwater that has a slight current. There is not much you can see but the gravel riverbed and the dirt bank on one side. An Organia ‘fish’ is poking through the riverbed while many Masticephalus drift past. Tromaktikes garides evolved from Dinocaroides hibridus. It is also a freshwater predator but it has even more powerful mandibles capable of penetrating the calcium carbonate shells of bivalves (and molluscs if there were any in freshwater). The half-exoskeleton bearing animal also has a greater number of smaller lobes comprising it’s two big ones, meaning extra manoeuvrability. Lastly, it has better eyesight because it has a new pair of forward facing eyes, and two of the side ones are now positioned on short stalks.

This relatively large species of Anazitonta is a hunter of smaller members of the genus; the ancestral Anazitonta anazitonta, as well as Pigocauda corallus. There is much algae to be eaten that cover the rocks like a carpet along with fronds of seaweed swaying from their anchors with the tide so you continue grazing peacefully. Waves ripple the surface above. The tide starts moving out to sea and the water level starts dropping accordingly so you keep moving - while grazing - to remain underwater. A few weeks later, you are found in an area surrounded by loose rubble with algae springing from gaps beneath it. A blue, worm-like, tentacled Farynxoskulus [Springblooms] lays atop a rock. Waves continue to ripple overhead in the clear, blue saltwater. The shore is in one direction and the rubble eventually ends in the other direction, leading to a plain. Placeholder name evolved from Pholgnathus lancus and is another arthropod with six pairs of appendages, including steering arms and claws. It has the distinctive keratin rostrum, stuck between two antennae. This particular species inhabits the depths where, at the time of its evolution, it is the most complex species about. It feeds on the soft, sessile animals there, like sponges and sea anemones, crawling across the cold, dark ocean floor following smells with its antennae. To live in this environment, it has had to lose its swim bladder - as well as make some chemical changes - so it spends most of its time walking unlike its relatives which spent an equal time walking and swimming. It has no predators here which might be why it’s lost it’s foul fluid glands. However, food is harder to find and finding a mate is particularly troublesome, especially as this species only produces half the amount of eggs as its predecessors.

Interestingly, the hatchlings are born without scales and are developed when the reach the juvenile stage.

An arthropod species with legs that become lobes for swimming and dangerous chelipeds. It is a predator and hunts some of the bigger animals around. It lives in tropical seas, oceans and estuaries as the apex predator and the largest arthropod to exist so far. Diplopygus differs from its predecessors, on top of being much bigger, by having a three-chambered heart pumping a double circulatory system. It also has a faster hyponome and ends in a pair of fan tail lobes. Furthermore, it has a slightly better brain and buries its eggs with food. Cannibalism is also relatively rare.

You hatch out into warm, quite murky saltwater. You are drifting along on a current, looking down at a rocky seabed strewn with seaweed as you pass over. Then you find yourself ensnared in the tentacles of a Myostila ‘sea anemone,’ along with an Anazitonta astatheana [Deathwake]. You are dragged closer and closer to its waiting mouth and struggle to free yourself. Then a relatively huge Pholgnathus ‘arthropod’ appears, walking across the seabed. It’s tapered rostrum comes first along with its exploring antennae. It attacks the Myostila with the thin mandibles in front of its steering arms. This enables you to get free and escape its clutches, free but exhausted. You are still drifting over rocky seabed, with waves crashing overhead. You find a shoal of Inolarynx and join them. An Allostoma, a proto-worm with a sharp beak, wriggles through the current, followed by an Anazitonta. There is also an Empropthalmus shoal [Soundwave] drifting along and the escaped Anazitonta astatheana [Deathwake] is searching around. You can see a cave in the rocks in one direction while in the other direction the seabed descends into a gully but you are slowly moving past thanks to the current. (2)

This is a predatory proto-fish that lives in the Temperate Ocean of the Southern Hemisphere. It’s black, has bioluminescent spots all over it and sharp, venomous fangs. It lives in loose shoals. Inolarynx has pharyngeal muscles around the mouth and throat that allow it to create a buccal pump that draws water past the gills. It also sucks in organisms from the water. It has a much softer memory than its predecessor.

You approach the one left behind [it’s not Zenzone] and get up close before biting down. Your tough mandibles go right through the exoskeleton, causing a deep wound clouding the water with blood. At the same time the mandibles inject your toxin into the Saccenta’s body. The Saccenta tries to escape but can’t get far at all before it succumbs to exhaustion, blood loss and toxin. All that is left is for you to casually swim up to it and begin feasting. You remain in murky, very warm freshwater that has a slight current. You are now an adult, ready to reproduce, but still exhausted. There is not much you can see but the gravel riverbed and the dirt bank on one side. Gempliaori setobrachius is filtering from the riverbed while many Masticephalus drift past. Another Tromaktikes is also swimming along with the current. Tromaktikes garides evolved from Dinocaroides hibridus. It is also a freshwater predator but it has even more powerful mandibles capable of penetrating the calcium carbonate shells of bivalves (and molluscs if there were any in freshwater). The half-exoskeleton bearing animal also has a greater number of smaller lobes comprising it’s two big ones, meaning extra manoeuvrability. Lastly, it has better eyesight because it has a new pair of forward facing eyes, and two of the side ones are now positioned on short stalks.

External Features: The top half of the cylindrical body is covered by half an exoskeleton, leaving the lower half unprotected. This skin contains blue melanin pigments. Around the mouth is a pair of very tough, horizontal mandibles and a circle of chemoreceptors. It has two eyes (camera eyes with calcite lenses that change shape and that have no blind spot) and the same model of eyes on stalks either side of the head. Behind these stalks on each side is a (typical apposition) compound eye. Blue and green come cells can be found in all these eyes. Along the body on each side are a series of many lobes combined into one. The rear of the body has an exoskeleton fantail and below that a hyponome.
Internal Features: Each cell in the body contains a relatively small number of piezolytes. Aquatic spiracles, one on each side behind the head lead from the outside to the inside. Glands near the skin secrete a foul fluid. Blood vessels run all throughout the body and in these vessels is an antifreeze (xylomannan fatty acid and polysaccharide). This relatively large species of Anazitonta is a hunter of smaller members of the genus; the ancestral Anazitonta anazitonta, as well as Pigocauda corallus. But luckily for these species it only inhabits the temperate waters of the Southern Hemisphere. It has a constantly faster metabolism, so it is faster and grows faster - at the cost of expending more energy. It also does not age as quicker, so has a longer lifespan.
