In the dark but hot, clear freshwater you descend to the pebbly riverbed. You wait here for a while but nothing happens. Later on, you can see an animal swimming close by. It is a dark, fish-shaped animal with a mouthful of square teeth, upwards-facing eyes, pectoral fins and semi-circular caudal fins at the base of the tail is swimming in your direction [Organia encephalus]. You swim towards it with your legs, fantail and hyponome; the Organia fish continues on it’s path but just when you almost collide it changes direction and tries to swim away. You lash out with your claws and grab it’s tail. The fish oscillates it’s tail rapidly and eventually pulls out of your grasp. The attack has left a deep wound in it’s tail and a trail of blood. You follow it along easily catching up with the now wounded fish that cannot swim fast. Again, you attack with your claws, this time penetrating fatally into it’s body. The fish lies still. You eat, exhausted but having staved off the hunger. Around you, you can just about see the river banks on either side and where the river winds behind a bend. The riverbed is pebbly. You do not sense any phytoplankton and little marine snow. Below you swims a woodlouse-like, mud-brown exoskeleton with a head carapace and ending in a fantail. It is armed with mandibles and a pair of clawed chelipeds plus is equipped with two pairs of eyes - camera in front of compound - and four pairs of paddle-lined legs [Sclerocephalus lutus]. Dotted around are animas that each have a blue, tubular body with lines of cilia along it and a jelly-like bell at the front end. There are tentacles around the mouth which exist on the centre of the upper face of the bell [Masticephalus recentibus]. (6 + 1 = Ding, ding, ding! Congrats, you have won a bonus point! A pair of antennae with chemoreceptors protrude forwards. Around the mouth is a pair of strong, horizontal mandibles. It has two eyes (large camera eyes with calcite lenses that change shape and that have no blind spot) either side of the head. Behind these on each side is a (typical apposition) compound eye. Blue and green come cells can be found in all these eyes. Two chelipeds with strong claws are held at the front of the body. There are four pairs of paddle-lined legs with gills. In the very dark, cold seawater, the scent of an Ahyponomus minor [worm] reaches your antennae. You crawl across the seabed towards this scent and when it seems to be coming from right below you, you start to dig at the ground with your claws. Quickly, your antennae come into contact with the worm; you lash out with your claws and slice through the worm. You then pick off pieces and feed them to your mandibles. A couple of years pass and you succesfully grow into a juvenile but a recent moult has exhausted you. You sense another couple Maurcolus repus [Positive]. However, you can also smell a Pulchellia chartus [tube anemone] and in the opposite direction to those two a Ahyponomus minor [worm]. Above you is an Allostoma ripleyii [egg-killing worm]. Maurcolus repus evolved from Pholgnathus lancus and is another arthropod with six pairs of appendages, including steering arms and claws. It has the distinctive keratin rostrum, stuck between two antennae. This particular species inhabits the depths where, at the time of its evolution, it is the most complex species about. It feeds on the soft, sessile animals there, like sponges and sea anemones, crawling across the cold, dark ocean floor following smells with its antennae. To live in this environment, it has had to lose its swim bladder - as well as make some chemical changes - so it spends most of its time walking unlike its relatives which spent an equal time walking and swimming. It has no predators here which might be why it’s lost it’s foul fluid glands. However, food is harder to find and finding a mate is particularly troublesome, especially as this species only produces half the amount of eggs as its predecessors.

A small proto-fish, this species has different types of scale to its predecessor; instead of being brittle yet heavy, they are flexible and light; instead of covering just the tail, the scales go up to where the head begins. The scales can even be shed when attacked to distract or lose an enemy and are quickly regrown. Interestingly, the hatchlings are born without scales and are developed when the reach the juvenile stage.

External Features: The fish-shaped body has black melanin pigmentation in its
skin. The mouth contains razor-sharp teeth and has a pair of olfactory receptors above it. There are also forwards facing eyes. Cycloid, deciduous scales cover from tail to where the head begins. A line of electroreceptors flanks the body. It has oval pectoral ray-fins and a semi-circular diphycercal caudal fin beneath the tail. At the base of the tail is a pair of spines. The whole of the body is covered in cycloid scales and blue autogenic photophores. Scales are not present in hatchlings.
Internal Features: Migmachordatix toxin is produced and secreted into spines. Three gill slits line just behind the head. A network of vascular blood vessels circulates red blood containing hemoglobin is pumped by a two-chambered heart. There is also a nephridium and the body is lined with muscle. The mouth is supported by a cartilage jaw. Food enters the stomach and then the intestine before exiting the anus. A brain with a memory lobe leads to a nerve cord with nerves running off like rungs on a ladder. The nerve cord is supported by a cartilage vertebrae. In the centre of the body is a swim bladder and below this are the testes in males and ova in females, with both in hermaphrodites.

You hatch out into hot, clear water at the bottom of a hole filled with animals with a strong, pill bug-like exoskeleton shaded sandy above and white below that ends in a double fan tail start arriving at the lagoon. It has a head with mandibles and two pairs of eyes (camera in front of compound) as well as a pair of clawed chelipeds followed by four pairs of legs with large paddles and then five swimmerets [Diplopygus pugilus]. There is some meat on the floor of the hole but it is already being swarmed by these other Diplopygus and you struggle to find room to eat it - you swim to it using your lobes, fantail and hyponome but you keep being shoved out the way by hungry hatchlings. Furthermore, this little activity already causes you to feel weak, dizzy and low on energy - you have been born with a defect; a weak heart that pumps less blood around the body and gives you less stamina. You are exhausted. When all the food is gone you are forced out of the hole. Looking around out here, you see a swathe of sand with many holes dug into it. The water is quite gentle. Several hatchlings remain in the area and you can see there are corpses of adult Diplopyugus on a beach. One adult in the middle of the area appears to still be swimming around. (1)

Diplopygus is a lobe-limbed arthropod with two fan tails, making it a proficient swimmer, as well as having a spring-loaded cheliped. It is a predator of both the open tropical seas and tropical estuary biomes. It is comparatively huge to any other animal alive at the time of its arrival. It has a larger mouth and better chemoreceptors than it’s predecessor, making it more successful.

Around the mouth are a few chemoreceptors. On either side of the head is a camera eye with calcite lens that changes shape and has no blind spot and a typical apposition compound eye, which both contain blue and green cone cells. Not including the chelipeds, it has four pairs of normal legs, one to a segment, that have a large paddle on the outer side. When swimming, these are folded in to give the effect of a continuous lobe halfway along the body. Behind that is five pairs of biramous, paddle-lined swimmerets, one to a segment. The rear of the body has two fan tail lobes and below that a hyponome. Males in the mating season have a series of blue stripes on their limbs, unique to the species.

With your upwards-facing eyes you see an animal with tentacles lined with feather-like pinnules in front of a jellyfish-like dome and a body lined with cillia [Medusodera pennicoronus]. You start swimming towards it, oscillating your tail from side to side through the cool, fairly murky saltwater. However, the Medusodera moves away and vanishes into the gloom so you have nothing left to chase. Above you and in shallower water there are several species; one has a yellow, tubular body with lines of cilia along it and a jelly-like bell at the front end. There are tentacles lined with feather-like pinnules around the mouth which exist on the centre of the upper face of the bell [Mollibarmis noimoxekino, Doomlightning]. There are several of these. There is also an animal with a blue, bell-shaped, jelly-like body with lappets around the skirt. Four long, barbed tentacles dangle down beneath the bell alongside four oral arms [Marleya primus]. Finally, there is an animal with a black, bioluminescent fish-shaped body. It has sharp teeth, forward-facing eyes, pectoral fins and spines next to the semi-circular caudal fins at the base of the tail [Lepidoderes immortalii]. External Features: The body is fish-shaped with black melanin pigmentation in the skin, which is covered by cycloid scales and contains blue autogenic photophores all over. At the head is the mouth with sharp teeth, some olfactory receptors and facing upwards is a pair of eyes, in which the lens changes shape and it has no blind spot. There is a line of electroreceptors along the flank. It has pectoral fins, two semi-circle caudal fins at the back of the tail and a pair of spines at the tails’ base.
Internal Features: In most of the body’s cells is a small amount of piezolytes. Behind the tail spines are toxin glands, filling the spine with toxin. On each side of the throat are three pairs of gills, inside gill slits. The gills are connected to the blood vessels closed circulatory system, which contains hemoglobin - making it appear red. The system is made up of a single circuit pumped by a heart. There is also a network of muscles across the body. Along the dorsal side of the body is the cartilage vertebra that links the cartilage skull and jaw with the tail. Another line of features is the gastrointestinal tract, starting from the throat and leading to a stomach chamber, followed by intestines. It also includes a liver and kidneys and ends with the bladder and anus. It is connected to a one-chambered swim bladder. It has a pair of gonads. Two nerve cords, starting from the brain, run down the vertebra and branch out into a network of nerves across the whole body.

In a pit in the seabed, surrounded by hot, clear water, you release your lure and wait for something to come by. You see the surface far above become chaotic. A dark, fish-shaped animal with a mouthful of square teeth, upwards-facing eyes, pectoral fins and semi-circular caudal fins at the base of the tail swims along [Organia negrus]. The fish starts investigating your lure and swims ever closer. Finally, it gets too close and you burst out of your pit and grab the fish. Through multiple attacks of your claws and stingers, the fish is killed and you are able to eat it. You remain here after several more months, successfully feeding, moulting and avoiding predation. You become a juvenile but you are exhausted from a recent moult. Some fan-shaped, flexible corals cling to the valley walls [Rhipiella tropicae]. Algae also grows here and a few Organia negrus fish are feeding on the algae. You can also see a few cup-shaped animals with tentacles attached to the walls [Thalassoprincipia atroboceanus]. Swimming above the valley is an animal with a woodlouse-like exoskeleton, sandy above and white below, that ends in a double fantail. It is armed with mandibles and a pair of clawed chelipeds plus is equipped with two pairs of eyes - camera in front of compound -, four pairs of paddle-legs and five swimmerets [Diplopygus ramstirpes]. A predatory ambush hunter that lures prey in with a lure that resembles algae, Haleglossus name lives throughout the tropical ocean, Olympia, Delphi, Aeaea and Tartarus. In the opposite vein to it’s predecessor it produces more eggs than many other species on the planet; it can produce 10,000 eggs each spawning when they gather at mating sites in Early Spring. However, it seems to have lost the part of it’s brain that allows for spatial awareness. It lives alongside another Haleglossus species on Tartarus; it has more fatalities due to being smelt easier by predators but produces more young to counter this.

In the inky, dark, watery depths, you wait for a mate. You move little across the soft seabed, so as to preserve energy. The scent of a nearby Maurcolus [Immortal] reaches you but it is not an adult so cannot reproduce. After some time, the scent of another Maurcolus reaches your antennae and you start walking towards it. You eventually bump into each other and then successfully reproduce, scattering eggs into the water, which float away. This Maurcolus moves away and vanishes but the scent of another, in addition to the immature Maurcolus [Immortal], reaches you. However, you can also smell a Pulchellia chartus [tube anemone] and in the opposite direction to those two a Ahyponomus minor [worm]. Above you is an Allostoma ripleyii [egg-killing worm]. Maurcolus repus evolved from Pholgnathus lancus and is another arthropod with six pairs of appendages, including steering arms and claws. It has the distinctive keratin rostrum, stuck between two antennae. This particular species inhabits the depths where, at the time of its evolution, it is the most complex species about. It feeds on the soft, sessile animals there, like sponges and sea anemones, crawling across the cold, dark ocean floor following smells with its antennae. To live in this environment, it has had to lose its swim bladder - as well as make some chemical changes - so it spends most of its time walking unlike its relatives which spent an equal time walking and swimming. It has no predators here which might be why it’s lost it’s foul fluid glands. However, food is harder to find and finding a mate is particularly troublesome, especially as this species only produces half the amount of eggs as its predecessors.

In cool, quite murky, saltwater, there is an animal with a black, fish-shaped body. You slowly crawl across the seafloor towards it and it does not move away. When you get close enough, you grab it with your tentacles and pull it towards your beak which makes quick work of the fish, killing it and eating it. You survive for several months, succesfully becoming a subadult. However, a recent hunt has exhausted you. You look over the sandy seabed that becomes shingle further up. Waves travel overhead. External Features: At the front are the four thread and sucker-bearing cirri, followed by the beak over the mouth and chemoreceptors. It has a thick, conical shell on the back, made of calcite. This is secreted by the mantle, which is a layer on the skin. The skin contains red melanin pigmentation. A pair of camera eyes that focus by moving the lens but have a blind spot, sit on stalks through holes in the shell. At the back of the shell is a hyponome, capable of swivelling.
Internal Features: Each cell contains lysozymes and piezolytes. The hyponome pumps water into the mantle cavity, which contains the six pairs of gills and the phragmocone with a wide siphuncle. The body has a circuit of blood vessels pumped by a dorsal vessel which pass the gills and saccate metanephridium, containing anti-freeze threitol sugar alcohol. It has gonads in the lower part of the body and muscles across the body. There is a stomach attached to the coiled intestine. From the ganglia in the head is a single, ventral nerve cord with nerves running off.

A North-East Tartarus Lake
In the open water that feels hot and is clear and gentle, you rest, floating around aimlessly. Your rest means you are no longer exhausted but it does not long before you are disturbed as you are bumped into by an animal with a blue, tubular body with lines of cilia along it and a jelly-like bell at the front end. There are tentacles around the mouth which exist on the centre of the upper face of the bell [Masticephalus recentibus]. You cannot see the bottom or the sides of the water, just endless water. There are tubular, blue animals with a jellyfish dome at one end which has little tentacles sticking out the top and lines of cillia along the body [Masticephalus recentibus]. There is very little phytoplankton here. The only other animal you can see is an animal with a strong, pill bug-like, blue exoskeleton that ends in a fan tail. It has a head with mandibles and two pairs of eyes (camera in front of compound) as well as a pair of clawed chelipeds followed by four pairs of legs with large paddles and then five swimmerets [Pultrypa jellyfishmonii]. The Pultrypa is swimming in your direction. Below is an animal with a black, fish-shaped body. It has square teeth, upwards-facing eyes, pectoral fins and semi-circular caudal fins at the base of the tail [Organia encephalus]. The water you are in is cool, quite murky and gentle, although the water does feel thick and viscous plus the waves periodically move you. The strength of chemicals signalling phytoplankton are diminishing but the chemicals from Mollibarmis noimoxekino are increasing. A couple animals swim through your downwards-pointed vision each with a yellow, tubular body with lines of cilia along it and a jelly-like bell at the front end. There are tentacles lined with feather-like pinnules around the mouth which exist on the centre of the upper face of the bell [Mollibarmis noimoxekino]. You try to locate some food but each time it is being diminished by other Mollibarmis. Without food, you become starved. With your eye pointing down, you see the seabed quite close below and more Mollibarmis floating around. Among them are two animals; one with a bell-shaped, jelly-like body with lappets around the skirt. Four long, barbed tentacles dangle down beneath the bell alongside four oral arms [Marleya primus]. The other has a black, bioluminescent fish-shaped body. It has sharp teeth, forward-facing eyes, pectoral fins and spines next to the semi-circular caudal fins at the base of the tail [Lepidoderes immortalii, BlackInk]. An animal patrols along the deeper side of the area. It has a black, fish-shaped body. It has sharp teeth, upwards-facing eyes, pectoral fins and semi-circular caudal fins at the base of the tail [Organia acrodon]. This crinoid-like species has evolved to have it’s ganglia at the base of each arm rather than a central ganglia, meaning that each arm has greater reflexes and ability but that coordination of the animal as a whole is slightly worse as a result. Essentially, it’s brains are now in it’s arms. Mollibarmis is a filter-feeder. The chemoreceptors of Mollibarmis are located on the tube feet, unlike it’s predecessors and can smell over vast distances - 100 metres, to be precise. The strangest adaptation of the animal is that has a stomach that it could evert onto it’s chosen target and start to turn digest it externally and form it into a soup, which is then pulled back into the body with it’s stomach. This means it could eat food bigger than it’s mouth, and with the stronger acids could even eat food that has begun to rot. However, as a filter-feeder it cannot use this.

External Features: The cylindrical body with a jelly-filled dome has yellow skin. There is an endoskeleton of ossicles and they are arranged in plates in a up around the front called a theca. At the front are arms lined with feather-like pinnules lined with tube feet carrying chemoreceptors, followed by the circular mouth. It has teeth in it’s mouth. There are six pairs of gill slits. Along the body are four membranes with lines of cilia on them. On the ventral side of the body is a pinhole eye. At the bottom is a root-like holdfast.
Internal Features: Each cell contains lysozymes and piezolytes. A water vascular system carries water from the tube feet to the main canals that radiate from the central canal around the mouth, and also from the madroporite. In the dark but hot, clear freshwater you descend to the pebbly riverbed. You wait here for a while but nothing happens. Later on, you can see an animal swimming close by. It is a dark, fish-shaped animal with a mouthful of square teeth, upwards-facing eyes, pectoral fins and semi-circular caudal fins at the base of the tail is swimming in your direction [Organia encephalus]. You swim towards it with your legs, fantail and hyponome; the Organia fish continues on it’s path but just when you almost collide it changes direction and tries to swim away. You lash out with your claws and grab it’s tail. The fish oscillates it’s tail rapidly and eventually pulls out of your grasp. The attack has left a deep wound in it’s tail and a trail of blood. You follow it along easily catching up with the now wounded fish that cannot swim fast. Again, you attack with your claws, this time penetrating fatally into it’s body. The fish lies still. You eat, exhausted but having staved off the hunger. Around you, you can just about see the river banks on either side and where the river winds behind a bend. The riverbed is pebbly. You do not sense any phytoplankton and little marine snow. Below you swims a woodlouse-like, mud-brown exoskeleton with a head carapace and ending in a fantail. It is armed with mandibles and a pair of clawed chelipeds plus is equipped with two pairs of eyes - camera in front of compound - and four pairs of paddle-lined legs [Sclerocephalus lutus]. Dotted around are animas that each have a blue, tubular body with lines of cilia along it and a jelly-like bell at the front end. There are tentacles around the mouth which exist on the centre of the upper face of the bell [Masticephalus recentibus]. (6 + 1 = Ding, ding, ding! Congrats, you have won a bonus point! You rest in the lightless, cold seawater and regain a lot of energy as you remain undisturbed. After that, you find some scents of Ahyponomus minor [worm] reaching your antennae so you follow that scent, walking across the seabed. When it seems to be coming from below you start to dig at the ground with your claws. Quickly, your antennae come into contact with the worm; you lash out with your claws and slice through the worm. You then pick off pieces and feed them to your mandibles. The scent of an Allostoma ripleyii [egg-killing worm] is coming from above you. You attack that too and manage to wound it; the scent of it disappears. Though years then pass, the conditions in which you live barely changed; it is still pitch black, cold water above a seabed. You have grown into an adult, ready to reproduce and can sense with your antennae the smell of another Maurcolus repus making it’s way over the seafloor. It’s passing close to the odours of a Myostila bathyus [sea anemone] and a Siliconia siliconia [glass sponge]. In the opposite direction comes the smell of an Ahyponomus minor [worm] and a Maurcolus whealetus [Positive]. (5 + 1)

Maurcolus repus evolved from Pholgnathus lancus and is another arthropod with six pairs of appendages, including steering arms and claws. It has the distinctive keratin rostrum, stuck between two antennae. This particular species inhabits the depths where, at the time of its evolution, it is the most complex species about. It feeds on the soft, sessile animals there, like sponges and sea anemones, crawling across the cold, dark ocean floor following smells with its antennae. To live in this environment, it has had to lose its swim bladder - as well as make some chemical changes - so it spends most of its time walking unlike its relatives which spent an equal time walking and swimming. It has no predators here which might be why it’s lost it’s foul fluid glands. However, food is harder to find and finding a mate is particularly troublesome, especially as this species only produces half the amount of eggs as its predecessors.

You hatch out into hot, clear water at the bottom of a hole filled with animals with a strong, pill bug-like exoskeleton shaded sandy above and white below that ends in a double fan tail start arriving at the lagoon. It has a head with mandibles and two pairs of eyes (camera in front of compound) as well as a pair of clawed chelipeds followed by four pairs of legs with large paddles and then five swimmerets [Diplopygus pugilus]. There is some meat on the floor of the hole but it is already being swarmed by these other Diplopygus and you struggle to find room to eat it - you swim to it using your lobes, fantail and hyponome but you keep being shoved out the way by hungry hatchlings. Furthermore, this little activity already causes you to feel weak, dizzy and low on energy - you have been born with a defect; a weak heart that pumps less blood around the body and gives you less stamina. You are exhausted. When all the food is gone you are forced out of the hole. Looking around out here, you see a swathe of sand with many holes dug into it. The water is quite gentle. Several hatchlings remain in the area and you can see there are corpses of adult Diplopyugus on a beach. One adult in the middle of the area appears to still be swimming around. (1)

Diplopygus is a lobe-limbed arthropod with two fan tails, making it a proficient swimmer, as well as having a spring-loaded cheliped. It is a predator of both the open tropical seas and tropical estuary biomes. It is comparatively huge to any other animal alive at the time of its arrival. It has a larger mouth and better chemoreceptors than it’s predecessor, making it more successful.

On either side of the head is a camera eye with calcite lens that changes shape and has no blind spot and a typical apposition compound eye, which both contain blue and green cone cells. Not including the chelipeds, it has four pairs of normal legs, one to a segment, that have a large paddle on the outer side. When swimming, these are folded in to give the effect of a continuous lobe halfway along the body. Behind that is five pairs of biramous, paddle-lined swimmerets, one to a segment. The rear of the body has two fan tail lobes and below that a hyponome. Males in the mating season have a series of blue stripes on their limbs, unique to the species.

Blood vessels travel past every cell, carrying blue blood caused by hemocyanin, and the double circuit has a three-chambered heart. Coastal Shallows to the South of Ithaca
In the cool, fairly murky saltwater you see an animal with a yellow, tubular body with lines of cilia along it and a jelly-like bell at the front end. There are tentacles lined with feather-like pinnules around the mouth which exist on the centre of the upper face of the bell [Mollibarmis noimoxekino, Doomlightning]. You swim upwards with your tail and reach the animal. You swim around it a few times then try to bite it. It’s body is encased in a hard armour that your teeth cannot get through; in fact you lose a couple teeth doing this. When you bite the tentacles that reach out from the top you can cause a lot more damage to them, ripping off pinnules and tube arms. You also manage to eat the jelly-like bell, leaving the mutilated Mollibarmis to sink downwards and plonk on the seabed. These pieces of food do not give you a good return for energy, so you turn to rest. Out in the water, you simply float, regaining some stamina. Your rest is successful and undisturbed. When your rest is finished and you are rested, you head out into the ocean in search of food. Later, after traveling along the coast, you swim into the entrance to a cove, surrounded above by dark, craggy cliffs. Your starvation has led you here. A weak sun in a blue sky shines down. You can only look up. The water here is clearer and gentler than outside; there is lots of seaweed growing here that you see growing up. The waves are small. Passing through seaweed above is an animal with a black, fish-shaped body. It has square teeth, upwards-facing eyes, pectoral fins and semi-circular caudal fins at the base of the tail [Organia praecus]. You can smell more out of sight and can also smell Procrinus primus [ossicle-covered filter-feeder with stalk and pinnules]. (5 + 1)

External Features: The body is fish-shaped with black melanin pigmentation in the skin, which is covered by cycloid scales and contains blue autogenic photophores all over. At the head is the mouth with sharp teeth, some olfactory receptors and facing upwards is a pair of eyes, in which the lens changes shape and it has no blind spot. There is a line of electroreceptors along the flank. It has pectoral fins, two semi-circle caudal fins at the back of the tail and a pair of spines at the tails’ base.
Internal Features: In most of the body’s cells is a small amount of piezolytes. Behind the tail spines are toxin glands, filling the spine with toxin. On each side of the throat are three pairs of gills, inside gill slits. The gills are connected to the blood vessels closed circulatory system, which contains hemoglobin - making it appear red. The system is made up of a single circuit pumped by a heart. There is also a network of muscles across the body. Along the dorsal side of the body is the cartilage vertebra that links the cartilage skull and jaw with the tail. Another line of features is the gastrointestinal tract, starting from the throat and leading to a stomach chamber, followed by intestines. You rest on the seabed in hot, clear water. This helps you gain back some energy, enough that you are no longer exhausted. After your rest you take in your surroundings. The surface is far above and you are in a valley. Some fan-shaped, flexible corals cling to the valley walls [Rhipiella tropicae]. Algae also grows here and a few animals are feeding on it; they have a black, fish-shaped body. It has square teeth, upwards-facing eyes, pectoral fins and semi-circular caudal fins at the base of the tail [Organia negrus]. You can also see a few cup-shaped animals with tentacles attached to the walls [Thalassoprincipia atroboceanus]. Swimming above the valley is an animal with a woodlouse-like exoskeleton, sandy above and white below, that ends in a double fantail. A predatory ambush hunter that lures prey in with a lure that resembles algae, Haleglossus name lives throughout the tropical ocean, Olympia, Delphi, Aeaea and Tartarus. In the opposite vein to it’s predecessor it produces more eggs than many other species on the planet; it can produce 10,000 eggs each spawning when they gather at mating sites in Early Spring. However, it seems to have lost the part of it’s brain that allows for spatial awareness. It lives alongside another Haleglossus species on Tartarus; it has more fatalities due to being smelt easier by predators but produces more young to counter this.

You hatch out into cold, lightless seawater. You find some scents of Ahyponomus minor [worm] reaching your antennae so you follow that scent, walking across the seabed. When it seems to be coming from below you start to dig at the ground with your claws. Quickly, your antennae come into contact with the worm; you lash out with your claws and slice through the worm. You then pick off pieces and feed them to your mandibles. Several months pass over which you continue to grow. You can now sense a pair of Maurcolus repus [Immortal] towards the odours of a Myostila bathyus [sea anemone] and a Siliconia siliconia [glass sponge]. In the opposite direction comes the smell of an Ahyponomus minor [worm] and a Maurcolus whealetus [Positive]. (3 + 1)

You take a rest on the sandy seabed, ending up between a couple rocks so that your rest is undisturbed and long. You are no longer exhausted. At the opening to the gap between the rocks is an animal with a black, fish-shaped body. It has square teeth, upwards-facing eyes, pectoral fins and semi-circular caudal fins at the base of the tail [Organia negrus]. You slowly crawl across the seafloor towards it and it does not move away. When you get close enough, you grab it with your tentacles and pull it towards your beak which makes quick work of the fish, killing it and eating it. A few months pass and you grow into an adult, ready to reproduce. By this time you have moved to a new area; after traveling along the coast, you swim into the entrance to a cove, surrounded above by dark, craggy cliffs. A warm sun in a blue sky shines down on the warm, clear water. The water here is clearer and gentler than outside; there is lots of seaweed growing here. The waves are small. Passing through the seaweed are several animals, each with a black, fish-shaped body. It has square teeth, upwards-facing eyes, pectoral fins and semi-circular caudal fins at the base of the tail [Organia negrus]. In the seaweed is also an animal with a conical shell around the body up to the head, a beak, camera eyes on stalks and tentacles with suckers and threads. It is red [Stenoceras venator]. External Features: At the front are the four thread and sucker-bearing cirri, followed by the beak over the mouth and chemoreceptors. It has a thick, conical shell on the back, made of calcite. This is secreted by the mantle, which is a layer on the skin. The skin contains red melanin pigmentation. A pair of camera eyes that focus by moving the lens but have a blind spot, sit on stalks through holes in the shell. At the back of the shell is a hyponome, capable of swivelling.
Internal Features: Each cell contains lysozymes and piezolytes. The hyponome pumps water into the mantle cavity, which contains the six pairs of gills and the phragmocone with a wide siphuncle. The body has a circuit of blood vessels pumped by a dorsal vessel which pass the gills and saccate metanephridium, containing anti-freeze threitol sugar alcohol. It has gonads in the lower part of the body and muscles across the body. There is a stomach attached to the coiled intestine. From the ganglia in the head is a single, ventral nerve cord with nerves running off.

A North-East Tartarus Lake
An animal with a blue, woodlouse-like exoskeleton that ends in a fantail is heading towards you through the open, hot, clear freshwater. It is armed with mandibles and a pair of clawed chelipeds plus is equipped with two pairs of eyes - camera in front of compound -, four pairs of paddle-legs that join to form one continuous lobe and five swimmerets [Pultrypa jellyfishmonii]. You turn to the side and start swimming off in that direction instead, eventually losing sight of the Pultrypa. You are now exhausted and starving. The lakebed rises into view and soon you can see the shore of the lake. A river is emptying into it and you swim up this river. Around you, you can just about see the river banks on either side and where the river winds behind a bend. The riverbed is pebbly. Several animals float by. They each have a blue, tubular body with lines of cilia along it and a jelly-like bell at the front end. There are tentacles around the mouth which exists on the centre of the upper face of the bell [Masticephalus recentibus]. At the side of the river, near some algae is an animal that has a woodlouse-like, green exoskeleton that ends in a fantail. It is armed with mandibles and a pair of clawed chelipeds plus is equipped with two pairs of eyes - stalked camera in front of compound - and four pairs of paddle-lined legs [Caulops vulgarus]. Upriver, laying on the riverbed is an animal with a woodlouse-like, mud-brown exoskeleton with a head carapace and ending in a fantail. It is armed with mandibles and a pair of clawed chelipeds plus is equipped with two pairs of eyes - camera in front of compound - and four pairs of paddle-lined legs [Cavuops tartarus].

Coastal Shallows to the South of Ithaca
The scent of an increased amount of marine snow beckons to you through the cool, quite murky saltwater, so you start to swim as fast as you are able towards it - pulsating your bell and rowing with the lines of cillia. Suddenly, your path is blocked by an animal with a black, fish-shaped body. It has sharp teeth, upwards-facing eyes, pectoral fins and semi-circular caudal fins at the base of the tail [Organia acrodon, OoferDoofer]. The fish circles you several times before biting you; it’s teeth cannot get through the ossicle endoskeleton, leaving relatively unscathed. You try to swim away but it is faster and more agile. Then it starts to chomp down on your tentacles, ripping off pinnules and tube feet before eating away at your bell. Without it, you sink helplessly to the seafloor, falling onto it pathetically. With your tentacles massacred, you cannot feed. There is nothing to do but wait as starvation inevitably comes and you die slowly, mutilated. (2 + 1 = You have not thrived. You will be reborn, as your species goes on.)

This crinoid-like species has evolved to have it’s ganglia at the base of each arm rather than a central ganglia, meaning that each arm has greater reflexes and ability but that coordination of the animal as a whole is slightly worse as a result. Essentially, it’s brains are now in it’s arms. Mollibarmis is a filter-feeder. The chemoreceptors of Mollibarmis are located on the tube feet, unlike it’s predecessors and can smell over vast distances - 100 metres, to be precise. The strangest adaptation of the animal is that has a stomach that it could evert onto it’s chosen target and start to turn digest it externally and form it into a soup, which is then pulled back into the body with it’s stomach. This means it could eat food bigger than it’s mouth, and with the stronger acids could even eat food that has begun to rot. However, as a filter-feeder it cannot use this.

External Features: The cylindrical body with a jelly-filled dome has yellow skin. There is an endoskeleton of ossicles and they are arranged in plates in a up around the front called a theca. At the front are arms lined with feather-like pinnules lined with tube feet carrying chemoreceptors, followed by the circular mouth. It has teeth in it’s mouth. There are six pairs of gill slits. Along the body are four membranes with lines of cilia on them. On the ventral side of the body is a pinhole eye. At the bottom is a root-like holdfast.
Internal Features: Each cell contains lysozymes and piezolytes. A water vascular system carries water from the tube feet to the main canals that radiate from the central canal around the mouth, and also from the madroporite. The body has a hemacoel and a few small blood vessels from the gills. The blood is violet because it contains hemerythrin. Anti-freeze threitol sugar alcohol flows around the body. It has a gonads. It has muscles across the body. It has a monogastric digestive system; the stomach, located after a short esophagus, is split into two parts and one pouch can be everted. The is a ganglia at the base of each arm, and forms a radial nerve system which is connected to a nerve cord that runs down the rest of the body.
Reproduction: Sexual Reproduction. External Fertilisation. 1,000 eggs per spawning.

Locomotion: Active (20NP). Paddles with cilia.
Action: attempt to mate with the other venator, and if it is of the wrong sex or some other issue, I will kill an organia, and look for another.
Action: use my surroundings to sneak up on the Praecus and attack it, then retreat back to thecliffs, hoping to find a nook to hide in and repeat for other possible prey
