Tectonic activity carries on, causing the volcanoes at mid-ocean ridges to pump megatonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. A number of large bays have emerged where the land continues to break up. The global temperature has stabilised at 30c. The climate is now mostly tropical and subtropical, as temperate zones have been pushed into the polar zones. Because of the heat, the oceans are highly stratified and water below the thermocline is hypoxic. Ocean downwelling occurs now at the equator, and at much less frequency.

Far out in space, a large asteroid has the planet of Ezta in its crosshairs, and is moving quickly towards it. It will arrive in days. Preceding it, are fractures of small rocks that have broken off it; these are visible as frequent shooting stars crossing the sky for the preceding days. The shooting star display is especially beautiful at night, far above the silent, rocky land and the bustling waterways and oceans.

Salcaedis corcillum, Male (LC)
Tropical Wet-Dry Barrens, Early Spring
You chase down one of the Icthyotelus that you see, quickly catching up to it. You grab it in your claws and cut through it easily, quickly killing it. You then consume your catch to get some nutrition back. You are now exhausted though. The brackish water is hot and murky. The bed is muddy, and the tide is slowly retreating. You see a few Icthyotelus sensus swim past. You can sense some saltwater in one direction. You can smell a couple Pultrypa. (3 + 1)

Salcaedis corcillum

Latest Mutations: Tropical Tolerance = 5, Intelligence = 6, Heart = 5, Stronger Mandibles = 2
This species has become marine, occupying the tropics around the Uteenessa Ocean. It can only hunt soft-bodied creatures because it has rather blunt and weak pincers. It can also graze. When reproducing, they return to certain sites in estuaries based in the tropics across both Olympia and Tartarus. This is thanks to their ability to remember long-term events.

External Features: Iridiphore pigments give the calcified exoskeleton with many plates covering the cylindrical body a metallic, blue sheen. This covers the skin. The mouth has a pair of mandibles (chelicera) and also has nearby chemoreceptors. On the side of the head are a pair of lens eyes and behind them a pair of compound eyes. The exoskeleton sports ten pairs of legs; the first are chelipeds which end in long, serrated pincers (chela), the next four are lined with paddles and used for walking and the final five are smaller, forked (biramous) swimmerets, also with paddles. The exoskeleton ends in a fan tail, and below this is a hyponome.
Internal Features: Spiracles at the edge of the body draw in water past gill-like structures. A closed circulatory system of blood vessels transports blue blood efficiently around the body, pumped by a two-chambered heart. Anti-freeze glycoproteins circulate in the body fluids. A nephridium funnels out chemical waste and expels it through a pore. The body is supported by a system of muscles. From the mouth, a tube leads to the stomach, then into the coiled intestines and finally to the anus. A brain in the head connects to a nerve cord, which itself is connected to nerves like rungs of a ladder. In the centre of the body is a swim bladder, while below can be found testes (in a male or hermaphrodite) or an ova (in a female or hermaphrodite). Throughout the whole body seeps a bitter fluid.

Lepidoderes immortalii (NT)
Subpolar Temperate Shallows, Late Autumn
You follow the scent of soft coral, towards where it gets stronger. You try to keep a look out for danger but it’s pitch black. The first sign of danger that you get is a Cerceps claw grabbing one of your fins and tearing it off. The gaping wound spills your blood into the water. Only now do you notice the electrical signal of a Cerceps practically right on top of you. The salty water is still cool and pitch black. You smell the soft coral still as well as sensing the Cerceps. (1)

Latest Mutations: Extend scale covering = 6, Scales become more flexible = 4, Remove scales from Hatchling stage = 6
A small proto-fish, this species has different types of scale to its predecessor; instead of being brittle yet heavy, they are flexible and light; instead of covering just the tail, the scales go up to where the head begins. The scales can even be shed when attacked to distract or lose an enemy and are quickly regrown. Interestingly, the hatchlings are born without scales and are developed when the reach the juvenile stage.

The Cerceps tries attacking you again but it can’t get through the scales. It eventually gives up and swims off. You crawl through viscous water towards the sight of proto-fish swimming about together in a shoal. It’s a long journey. You get close and they start to come towards you. Luckily, it is the Archaeostomus and you are not attacked. You join the shoal. You smell a nearby dead Masticephalus and move towards it. You are able to eat the corpse and have your fill. You are even more exhausted now. Out in front you can see the wide open ocean, with no sign of any surfaces. There is the occasional Masticephalus lepusensis and Anazitonta. Pultrypa falbracchi, Male (LC)
Tropical Very Wet Barrens
You have a rest on the muddy riverbed. You rest safely and recover some energy. Immediately, you search for more Pultrypa and follow the scent of one through the murky water. When it visually materialises out of the murk, you approach it. However, it becomes clear you are not compatible because this is another male and so your search must go on. But now, after a while of mating and neglecting food, you have become starving. The brackish water is hot and murky. The bed is muddy, and the tide is slowly retreating. You see a few Icthyotelus sensus swim past. You can, again, smell another Pultrypa in one direction and a Salcaedis is another. (4)

Latest Mutations: Bigger = 4, Larger, Sharper Mandibles = 6 (penetrates hardness 3), Spring-loaded Arm (a small saddle that winds up the arm to strike quicker) = 4, Better Respiration = 6
The claws of Pultrypa are devastating weapons; they are long, serrated and can crush through even calcified chitin exoskeletons. The only armour they cannot penetrate are full on calcium carbonate shells. And a saddle-like muscle can prepare the chelipeds to be launched like they are spring-loaded, moving these dangerous weapons with lightning-quick speed. Add all this to their relative size, the largest animal at the time of its appearance, and improved respiratory system, which has enlarged the spiracles into chambers, and it creates an Oliverian apex predator.

In Early Spring, when ready to reproduce, move to brackish water and gather in specific breeding sites (+1 Evolution) and then sense for pheromones of opposite sex and move towards them, then attempt to mate with the source.
External Features: About fourteen segments of a calcified, chitin exoskeleton cover the cylindrical, slightly rounded body, and connected by a flexible tissue. The structure creates a blue sheen. The exoskeleton covers the skin. A pair of mandibles lay on either side of the mouth. There are also chemoreceptors on the front and at the side of the head are a pair of lens eyes, then a pair of compound eyes both with blue and green receptor cells. On each segment of the middle exoskeleton is a pair of jointed legs, adding up to ten. The first pair are chelipeds which ends in long, serrated pincers (chela). The next four pairs of legs are lined with paddles up until the tip. The final five pairs are biramous swimmerets, lined with paddles. There is the occasional Masticephalus lepusensis and Anazitonta. Sunlight beams into the clear, warm water. You detect the presence of your three shoal mates. You can see further away a shoal of Empropthalmus.

Uhhh… what? You didn’t put my roll up, and it didn’t seem like it counted. Also, how big is the meteor?

thanks for the round stealth, its a shame i didnt get to breed as im sure theres a big chance ill die this round but ill try again anyways
Action: feeling the impending doom that a higher power told me about ill put everything I have into breeding this is a do or die situation!!!
ill use my stored point on this

This is your new round. I just forgot to add the roll at the end. The scene-setting might be the same because I have time pressure right now so I have to be quick with rounds.

The size might come up in the next round.

Action:" with my shoal, attack the shoal of emprothalmus, by sneaking up on them and ambushing them.

Have I had replies from @AgentTine, @immortaldragon or @Spring_blooms yet?

Sorry for the delay, been a bit distracted.

Action: Swim away from the Cerceps and see if there’s any nearby coral fields I can feed at without being bothered by it. If not, then search for one that’s a bit further away and feed on that.

So sorry, internet’s been out due to Sally.

Action: Try to rest as I let the current take me along, picking up whatever food I can manage to find.

Something much worse appears in the sky alongside the shooting stars on one fateful day. An asteroid is almost about to enter Ezta’s atmosphere, signalled by a blinding light as it comes. It crashes with a huge force, but fortunately for the inhabitants, it’s a relative tiddler with a diameter of 400 metres. However, for the locals of its impact point in mid Tartarus, it’s a different story. Any beneath the impact are obliterated, as are those caught in the crater blast; the asteroid immediately explodes upon impact sending debris from itself and the ground into a huge plume stretching up through the atmosphere. An impact crater of over 5km is created. The other animals in Tartarus feel the tremors of the impact and for thousands of square miles a superhot blast front rolls out, destroying all life in its path. The rest of the planet is lucky that this destruction only covers a portion of the planet. The widely spread, simple life that exists on Ezta manages to avoid any extinctions, despite the huge losses of life in affected areas.

Pultrypa falbracchi, Male (LC)
Tropical Very Wet Barrens
Through the murk of the hot estuary, a blinding light suddenly fills the sky and then fades away just as suddenly. Another Pultrypa quickly emerged from the murk and approaches you. It’s an adult female. Just then, the estuary is shook by a powerful tremor and the water is highly disturbed, waves crashing into each other but you are still successfully able to mate, releasing eggs into the turbulent water. You see at least one egg driven into a small hole in a rock. But very quickly after, a dark cloud arrives over the estuary. You feel the heat increase until it is unbearable and you are boiled to death in the dark. (4 + 1 = You have not thrived. You can be reborn, as your species goes on. Pultrypa falbracchi

Respiration 1 (Stationary Respiration). Stamina 3. Strength 0.5. Support 1.5. Swim Speed 2.4. Toughness 3. Walk Speed 1.5.
Intelligence / Behaviour: Processes information and responds based on fixed behaviours. When feeling pain; roll up into a ball. When hungry; look or sense for algae or animals.
At the end is a fan tail, extended from the exoskeleton, with a hyponome below.
Internal Features: The hyponome does not form much of a chamber. Spiracles dotted along the body lead to muscular chambers containing gills. The mouth leads to a tube that reaches the stomach, which connects to the coiled intestines and this to the anus. A brain in the head connects to a nerve cord, which is connected to nerves that spread across the body like rungs of a ladder. Blood vessels cross all over the body, connected to a two-chambered heart. The blood is blue because it contains hemocyanin; it also contains anti-freeze glycoproteins. A muscular system exists in the body, including a saddle-like muscle on the inside joint of the chelipeds. There is a nephridium, a swim bladder and sexual organs. A bitter fluid is produced by a sac.
Reproduction: Sexual, Ovuliparity (External Fertilisation). 1,000 eggs per spawning. Hermaphroditism.
Castes/Phases: Male & Female until late life (Identical) (+1 Evolution)

The mouth has a pair of mandibles (chelicera) and also has nearby chemoreceptors. On the side of the head are a pair of lens eyes and behind them a pair of compound eyes. The exoskeleton has flexible flaps that overlap each other to create a whole lobe on the side and ends in a fan tail. Below this is a hyponome.
Internal Features: Spiracles at the edge of the body draw in water past gill-like structures. A closed circulatory system of blood vessels transports blue blood efficiently around the body. Anti-freeze glycoproteins circulate in the body fluids. A nephridium funnels out chemical waste and expels it through a pore. The body is supported by a system of muscles. Toxin glands are inside the mandibles. From the mouth, a tube leads to the stomach, then into the coiled intestines and finally to the anus. A brain in the head connects to a nerve cord, which itself is connected to nerves like rungs of a ladder. In the centre of the body is a swim bladder, while below can be found testes or an ova. Throughout the whole body seeps a bitter fluid.
Reproduction: Sexual, Ovuliparity (External Fertilisation). 1,000 eggs.
Castes/Phases: Hermaphrodite.
Locomotion: Undulation. Fluke Swimming. Hyponome Burst. Buoyancy Control. Active (20NP)
