Action: Head towards te deepening seabed, looking for any interesting landmarks or pockets of food to filter.

@OoferDoofer, you don’t have any lungs right now. Your only respiratory organs are the gills and skin. I can take your vote as adding lungs with a them being large a possible bonus for a good roll?

@OoferDoofer, sorry one last thing. I’ve been researching into lungs and the first step is you’ll need pharyngeal muscles which move the throat and mouth to allow buccal pumping. This will help you respire through gills anyway. And if its because you are preparing for land (which I know you specifically have expressed interest in) you could actually breathe through your skin because its so thin.

yes, thank you. my main goal is to get on land.

Tectonic activity carries on, causing the volcanoes at mid-ocean ridges to pump megatonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The global temperature has stabilised at 30c. The climate is now mostly tropical and subtropical, as temperate zones have been pushed into the polar zones. Because of the heat, the oceans are highly stratified and water below the thermocline is hypoxic. Ocean downwelling occurs now at the equator, and at much less frequency.

Another proto-fish has evolved but is still in small numbers currently. It has the ability to use pharyngeal muscles to pump water over gills and to suck in prey.

Latest Mutations: Tropical Tolerance = 5, Intelligence = 6, Heart = 5, Stronger Mandibles = 2
This species has become marine, occupying the tropics around the Uteenessa Ocean. It can only hunt soft-bodied creatures because it has rather blunt and weak pincers. It can also graze. When reproducing, they return to certain sites in estuaries based in the tropics across both Olympia and Tartarus. This is thanks to their ability to remember long-term events.

Intelligence / Behaviour: Processes information and responds based on fixed behaviours. When feeling pain; roll up into a ball. When hungry; look or sense for algae or animals. In Early Spring, when ready to reproduce, move to brackish water and gather in specific breeding sites and then sense for pheromones of opposite sex and move towards them, then attempt to mate with the source.
External Features: Iridiphore pigments give the calcified exoskeleton with many plates covering the cylindrical body a metallic, blue sheen. This covers the skin. The mouth has a pair of mandibles (chelicera) and also has nearby chemoreceptors. On the side of the head are a pair of lens eyes and behind them a pair of compound eyes. The exoskeleton sports ten pairs of legs; the first are chelipeds which end in long, serrated pincers (chela), the next four are lined with paddles and used for walking and the final five are smaller, forked (biramous) swimmerets, also with paddles. The exoskeleton ends in a fan tail, and below this is a hyponome.
Internal Features: Spiracles at the edge of the body draw in water past gill-like structures. A closed circulatory system of blood vessels transports blue blood efficiently around the body, pumped by a two-chambered heart. Anti-freeze glycoproteins circulate in the body fluids. A nephridium funnels out chemical waste and expels it through a pore. The body is supported by a system of muscles. From the mouth, a tube leads to the stomach, then into the coiled intestines and finally to the anus. A brain in the head connects to a nerve cord, which itself is connected to nerves like rungs of a ladder. In the centre of the body is a swim bladder, while below can be found testes (in a male or hermaphrodite) or an ova (in a female or hermaphrodite). Throughout the whole body seeps a bitter fluid.

Subpolar Temperate Shallows, Late Winter
It’s pitch black but you have detected the chemical scent of Masticephalus blood. You follow the trail with ease and it quickly gets stronger until you sense the electrical signals of the Masticephalus right above you. This triggers you to burst up with your jaws open and bite down upon the Masticephalus. Your teeth and jaws get a good purchase and you bite your way right through it. You eat your fill of the Masticephalus. This success is replicated for many months to come and at 2 years old, you become a fully fledged adult, ready to reproduce. Over this time, the summer has come and gone. It is now winter again, leaving the water cool and pitch black. You can smell several Masticephalus, a couple of Elinopterus and another couple of Lepidoderes. There is also a Marleya. (6)

You crawl across the sandy floor, waiting to sense some prey. You pass tiny Elephazous and a few sponges and corals as you crawl but no prey. Then you see a Proticthys near a patch of seaweed on the seafloor. You jet towards it, winding up your arm. You are soon upon it but the Proticthys has only just noticed you; it turns, but you unleash your claws which rips a great wound in the fish’s flank. It limps away, fatally wounded, leaking blood and you follow its slow movements lazily. It comes to a stop and you begin feasting on your prize. The next few months pass quite easily. You manage to carry on eating and growing, whilst moulting, in the generally uniform conditions of the tropical sea. You look around. It’s clear and sunny and the water feel a nice hot temperature. Below you is an undulating, sandy seabed which in one direction gradually gets shallower and shallower. Several Caulops are feeding on outcrops of seaweed. In the other direction, the seabed suddenly drops away. Another Pultrypa is swimming over this gap. (3 + 1)

Exhausted but starving, you swim lethargically through the murky estuary, scanning the mud for rocks, leaving trail of blood in your wake. You find some rocks but rest for just a moment, teetering on the edge of collapse. In that one moment, a Saccenta emerges suddenly from the murk in front before grabbing you once again in its claws.

Inolarynx, discovered by OoferDoofer, is the new proto-fish. It is sharing a niche with its main competitor, Empropthalmus. Although Inolarynx is better at catching prey with its suction ability, Empropthalmus has the much better memory and so is able to find prey and avoid more predators easier.

A few other species have also just started to appear; The small Entaops, E. parvus, flat sponge Platyodes tristus, stony coral Neocorallus primus and arthropod Phplgnathus lancus have all emerged in the temperate ocean of the Southern Hemisphere. The armoured worm Scutoskulus conneri and spongin sponge Chonifiltrus shrutii have evolved in the tropical ocean.

Sadly though, Skylos skylos has gone extinct, as it could just not compete with newer species.

Somewhere in the northern Uteenessa Ocean, a volcano jutting up thousands of meters from the seafloor is preparing to erupt again. Hot steam is escaping into the surrounding water creating boiling spots and a bulge is growing on the side. It’s also begun to have regular tremors.

You hatch out into hot, murky, brackish water, flowing along on a gentle current. You find some algae and graze on it for a while, growing steadily over the next few weeks. You cannot see very far because of the murk but you can see the muddy bottom, from which lawns of algae are growing. The heads of Arencolus peering out of their burrows in the mud dot the floor. Latest Mutations: Extend scale covering = 6, Scales become more flexible = 4, Remove scales from Hatchling stage = 6
A small proto-fish, this species has different types of scale to its predecessor; instead of being brittle yet heavy, they are flexible and light; instead of covering just the tail, the scales go up to where the head begins. The scales can even be shed when attacked to distract or lose an enemy and are quickly regrown. Interestingly, the hatchlings are born without scales and are developed when the reach the juvenile stage.

Pultrypa reponectus, Male (LC)
Tropical Shallows
Having spotted a Caulops feeding on seaweed, you crawl along the sandy seafloor in its direction. When you get closer, you jet towards it, winding up your arm as you go. In a second you are upon your surprised prey and grabbed it in your claws. Your claws slice through its body and in just a few seconds it is dead. You consume its flesh and feed well off of it. You repeat this in the area for months, taking Caulops after Caulops and getting bigger each time. After several months have passed you have reached adulthood and are ready to breed but you are exhausted from a recent hunt. Blue stripes have appeared in your legs. The water is hot and clear, with bright sunshine, shining through. You are in a shallow lagoon, where you see more than one other Pultrypa, some without bands of blue on their legs. A Dinocaroides has drifted into the lagoon. There are several Elephazous and Elinopterus here also and you can sense the chemicals of a Dolichotoma. (6 + 1 = Ding, ding, ding! Latest Mutations: Improve Paddles = 4, Better Muscles = 3, Increase Size = 3, Sand colored with a white underbelly. When in mating season give the males blue stripes on their limbs = 5
An arthropod with complicated appendages that is the top of the food chain in the tropical seas and oceans, as well as tropical estuaries around the world. They approach their prey before launching a wound-up arm at their victim and slicing it to death. The complication is that it has legs for walking but can fold them up so that the paddles form a lobe-like structure, such as in an Anomlaocaris. They employ two tones of colour to camouflage when seen from above or below but adult males will develop stripes of blue on their legs.

Inolarynx maculatus (NT)
Subpolar Temperate Shallows, Early Autumn
You head towards the Anazitonta anazitonta that you can see, sensing the electrical signals from your shoal mates right by your side. Together you swim up to the Anazitonta anazitonta. It tries to swim away but is surrounded by Inolarynx. You open your mouth and the trapped proto-fish is pulled towards you. You close the gap and bite into it, creating a deep, bloody wound. Your fangs inject venom into it, and it starts to shake while your shoal surround it. When it goes still, you move in and bite off the majority of the carcass and eat. Time continues on and winter arrives, bringing with it darkness and cool water. When spring comes and it gets light and warm, there are fewer members of your shoal but you have survived. You live also through the summer, feeding well in the warm, sunny water and avoiding predators. You grow into a subadult. The saltwater is now warm and sunlit but fairly murky. You sense your shoal mates around you. Looking around you, you can see the featureless open water, with the surface a short way above you and nothing below. However, in one direction you can see a cliff emerge. Below, a couple of Anazitonta anazitonta swim close to an Anazitonta astatheana. (5 + 1)

Stats: Buoyancy 1. Coordination 1. Desiccation Resistance 1. Dexterity 0.5. Digestion 2.2 (Can break down multicellular matter, can digest meat, 12% off). Filtration 0. Toughness 2. Intelligence 1. Respiration 1. Stability 1. Stamina 2. Strength 0.5. Support 1.5. Swim Speed 3.0. Walk Speed 0.5.
Intelligence / Behaviour: Processes information and responds based on fixed behaviours. When observing a predator; swim away. When hungry; look for prey. When ready to reproduce, look for other adults and move towards them, then attempt to mate with the source.
External Features: Iridiphore pigments give the chitin exoskeleton with many plates covering the cylindrical body a metallic, blue sheen. This covers the skin. The mouth has a pair of mandibles (chelicera) and also has nearby chemoreceptors. On the side of the head are a pair of lens eyes and behind them a pair of compound eyes. The exoskeleton has flexible flaps that overlap each other to create a whole lobe on the side and ends in a fan tail. Below this is a hyponome.
Internal Features: Spiracles at the edge of the body draw in water past gill-like structures. A closed circulatory system of blood vessels transports blue blood efficiently around the body. Anti-freeze glycoproteins circulate in the body fluids. A nephridium funnels out chemical waste and expels it through a pore. The body is supported by a system of muscles. Toxin glands are inside the mandibles. From the mouth, a tube leads to the stomach, then into the coiled intestines and finally to the anus. A brain in the head connects to a nerve cord, which itself is connected to nerves like rungs of a ladder. In the centre of the body is a swim bladder, while below can be found testes or an ova. Throughout the whole body seeps a bitter fluid.
Reproduction: Sexual, Ovuliparity (External Fertilisation). 1,000 eggs.
Castes/Phases: Hermaphrodite.
Locomotion: Undulation. Fluke Swimming. Hyponome Burst. Buoyancy Control. Active (20NP)
