Tectonic activity carries on, causing the volcanoes at mid-ocean ridges to pump megatonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The global temperature has stabilised at 30c. The climate is now mostly tropical and subtropical, as temperate zones have been pushed into the polar zones. Because of the heat, the oceans are highly stratified and water below the thermocline is hypoxic. Ocean downwelling occurs now at the equator, and at much less frequency.

Somewhere of the Tartarus coast, there is a large earthquake that shakes the seafloor and disrupts the water above. This generates a massive wave which has caused all the water at nearby coasts to shrink back to the sea in preparation.

This species has become marine, occupying the tropics around the Uteenessa Ocean. It can only hunt soft-bodied creatures because it has rather blunt and weak pincers. It can also graze. When reproducing, they return to certain sites in estuaries based in the tropics across both Olympia and Tartarus. This is thanks to their ability to remember long-term events.

The exoskeleton sports ten pairs of legs; the first are chelipeds which end in long, serrated pincers (chela), the next four are lined with paddles and used for walking and the final five are smaller, forked (biramous) swimmerets, also with paddles. You see a flat, soft sponge on a rock and begin eating that until you have had your fill. You survive a few months, successfully moulting, preying and growing. The conditions remain the same. You see the sandy seabed, interspersed with rocks. Another sponge sits atop a rock, while you your antennae are picking up an Ahyponomus from beneath the floor. Suddenly, there is an earthquake. This Southern Hemisphere proto-fish has a true camera eye, which allows it to see clearer and further, and an active electroreception sense but it has a less powerful sense of smell. The eyes help it to hunt in the sunlit summers, while electroreception aids in the dark polar nights. This small predator lives in small shoals and uses its sharp, venomous fangs to subdue prey.

Lepidoderes immortalii

A small proto-fish, this species has different types of scale to its predecessor; instead of being brittle yet heavy, they are flexible and light; instead of covering just the tail, the scales go up to where the head begins. The scales can even be shed when attacked to distract or lose an enemy and are quickly regrown. Interestingly, the hatchlings are born without scales and are developed when the reach the juvenile stage.

Pultrypa reponectus

An arthropod with complicated appendages that is the top of the food chain in the tropical seas and oceans, as well as tropical estuaries around the world. They approach their prey before launching a wound-up arm at their victim and slicing it to death. The complication is that it has legs for walking but can fold them up so that the paddles form a lobe-like structure, such as in an Anomlaocaris. They employ two tones of colour to camouflage when seen from above or below but adult males will develop stripes of blue on their legs.

After a few months of surviving like this, you have become a juvenile. The water is still hot and clear. Around you, you can see the sandy seabed. Behind you its get more rocky but in the other direction it gets deeper. You see a Zuckeria gastropod feeding on some algae coating the rocks, while an Atkinsonia cephalopod crawls along the floor. Luckily, you just get out in time, picking up a minor scratch from the barbed tentacles, as they close around the other Inolarynx. As you move away, you discover more Inolarynx gathering together through their electrical presence. You join them. It is still dark and cool. Apart from your shoal, you also sense the jellyfish and some Anazitonta. Suddenly, there is an esrthquake. (2)

It tries to crawl away as you crawl after it through the thick water. You catch up to it and dodge the spikes on it tail before delivering a venomous bite on to its flank. Injured and overcome with venom, the Anazitonta slows before coming to a complete halt. You then tear in on your catch and get a decent amount of food. You are exhausted from the chase. Diplopygus ramstirpes has asserted itself as the apex predator of the tropics.

A new generation of species has been discovered by paleontologists in rocks dating to this period in time. At least twenty-two new species have been found but as of yet they have not all been formally described. As soon as they have been, the details will be shared.

However, one exciting discovery known is that the first known land plants on Ezta have been found. These are very simple moss-like plants clinging to the sides of waterways. This may be the beginning of a new era of life on Ezta, where life on land is possible. Such a change in flora may also bring about other changes, such as climate.

You can sense the chemicals of a shoal of Empropthalmus above you. There are also a couple Anazitonta around but further away and nearby on the seabed is the scent of a Leptotheca. (5)

This Southern Hemisphere proto-fish has a true camera eye, which allows it to see clearer and further, and an active electroreception sense but it has a less powerful sense of smell. The eyes help it to hunt in the sunlit summers, while electroreception aids in the dark polar nights. This small predator lives in small shoals and uses its sharp, venomous fangs to subdue prey.

A small proto-fish, this species has different types of scale to its predecessor; instead of being brittle yet heavy, they are flexible and light; instead of covering just the tail, the scales go up to where the head begins. The scales can even be shed when attacked to distract or lose an enemy and are quickly regrown. Interestingly, the hatchlings are born without scales and are developed when the reach the juvenile stage.

An arthropod species with legs that become lobes for swimming and dangerous chelipeds. It is a predator and hunts some of the bigger animals around. It lives in tropical seas, oceans and estuaries as the apex predator and the largest arthropod to exist so far. Diplopygus differs from its predecessors, on top of being much bigger, by having a three-chambered heart pumping a double circulatory system. External Features: It has a cylindrical body which has a calcified, calcite exoskeleton in fourteen plates with joint tissue in between. The skin underneath has sandy melanin pigmentation on top and white melanin pigmentation underneath. One pair of legs have chela on the end. In front of the circular mouth is a mandible. Around the mouth are a few chemoreceptors. On either side of the head is a camera eye with calcite lens that changes shape and has no blind spot and a typical apposition compound eye, which both contain blue and green cone cells. There is a enclosed, one-chambered swim bladder in the dorsal side. There is a stomach and coiled intestines. A gland releases a foul fluid into the body fluids. Ganglia in the head lead into a dual dorsal nerve cord that has many nerves branching off. A cerebrum has memory neurons.

You witness a Pultrypa emerge from somewhere and attack the Atkinsonia, but it’s claws do nothing against the hard shell. You have become exhausted. The water is still hot and clear. Around you, you can see the sandy seabed. Behind you its get more rocky but in the other direction it gets deeper. You see a Zuckeria gastropod feeding on some algae coating the rocks, while an Atkinsonia cephalopod crawls along the floor. (4)

This is a predatory proto-fish that lives in the Temperate Ocean of the Southern Hemisphere. It’s black, has bioluminescent spots all over it and sharp, venomous fangs. It lives in loose shoals.
