Yeah I used to play lots of indies (and some old stuff too) on steam and GoG on mint. I used lutris but really any good launcher will do in theory. You might need to do a lot of fiddling with stuff that isn’t from steam, even if it is from GoG (though there’s gonna be resources telling you what to fix for GoG games).

EDIT: WHERE’S YOUR SSD??? it’s 2025, we do not install an OS on a hdd. I have mint on a hdd (old laptop it isn’t worth upgrading) and trust me, it books as slow as a normal pc boots windows 11, you will hate yourself if you try that.

You can also get a 250 GB ssd for cheap AF and keep the hard drive for games if you want. I cannot recommend enough getting an SSD. a sata SSD is also an option, it’s just a waste of pcie lanes.
significantly less important concern: unless you’re getting a good deal that just isn’t on pcpartbelgiumer (understandable, it just shows amazon prices), you might want to check out other GPUs. Buying used is worth it in spades unless the previous owner mined crypto or something, and I don’t think people do that with 1650s. you might want to consider a beefy GPU and a bigger PSU, depending on your budget. For example, a used 980 TI is a decent upgrade over a 1650, is likely cheaper, but draws more power. If you like AMD, you get way more options. Dunno. If it’s your choice, cool, but I just worry ppl are actually paying $250 for a 4 GB card.

I tend to save things excessively out of fear of losing progress on whatever I work on. Will my habit negatively affect the life of a computer with an SSD?

technically. what serious data hoarders do is use an SSD for everyday stuff and back up files to a large hard drive. But for practical, noncommercial purposes, there is basically one use case where you will actually hammer the drive so hard an HDD is actually better (and the speed difference won’t make you want to die using an HDD): extremely heavy piracy. I have rewritten my entire ssd many times over, and while the trimming algorithms have taken a few GB off, the speed recovery is SO worth it. Trust me. This is one of those “technically x is true but litterally it doesn’t matter”. SSDs are worth the price, and occasional trimming. Also, due to the risk of head crash, most people actually won’t even find HDDs lasting longer.

All you really need to add to it is an OS, and you can use Linux Mint for free. Other than that, it’s all the necessary parts!
