I am pretty sure we can figure out โSemi-Exoticโ Planet stuff much sooner. A Tidally Locked Planet sounds easier than a Methane Ocean Planet. Although, a Planet with more extreme Temperature sounds easier than that.
I mean it wonโt really be that mandatory to add it until space stage.
A new fully customizable map editor, together with the ability to upload maps to the Workshop, might help solve this problem to some extent.
But again such a thing would be a huge, huge amount of work. A map editor that has a lot of customization is an absolutely huge development undertaking. Which is probably why AAA games donโt come with map editors anymore like in early 2000s (they donโt seem worth it to investors so they are super rare to get with games anymore).
Q, would planets considerably hotter than Earth but not quite above the water boiling point (say, median temperature of 50-60 degrees C) also be valid start points for life and civs, or is there something fundamentally locking one or both of these off those worlds?
Many proteins are boiled at temperatures below 100ยฐC. So, advanced life may be quite vulnerable to temperature.
At the same time there are extremophiles which thrive at temperatures around 100 degrees C.
Simple extremophiles can thrive even in boiling water, but unless more heat-resistant protein analogues exist for highly organized organisms, no advanced life is possible on such planets.
On the other hand, cold is a little less of a problem, since death from cold is caused by the rupture of cells by ice crystals. If your body has something like antifreeze in its fluids, it can survive even in very low temperatures. Some frogs have biological antifreeze in their blood, allowing them to be frozen and thawed without harm. Considering that frogs are fairly highly organized organisms, I believe this is also possible for intelligent species.
So maybe hot planet life could be just NLAWK?
Perhaps, given that the diversity of possible proteins is greater than the number of atoms in the universe.
Oh, didnโt know that. Makes it even more likely.
When you get to an environment as extreme as a planet that has Methane Oceans, the planet itself isnโt your biggest problem. Youโd have to create an entirely different type of life, because it sure isnโt going to be carbon-and-water-based.
I feel like alternative biochemistries would be left for mods to figure out
Isnโt alternative biochemistries where part of the fun begins? I guess we will have to wait for mods in order to make Rocktopia.
Pretty sure what was not seen irl belongs in nonlawk and seeing how many nonlawk stuff there is I think most would probably only be added in the space stage development IF at all.
