I think we have specifically disabled the option for gif profile pictures. For obvious reasons it would be very annoying to allow.

I’ve never tried, but at the same time I haven’t seen anyone on discourse use a gif avatar.
So I’m going to say it probably doesn’t work. If it did work then it would be a lot of visual noise on a page, and I feel like the discourse devs wouldn’t allow that. The normal discourse theme has so small avatars that a gif wouldn’t even make much sense as it would be tiny.

I did check the discourse settings, and there is an option to allow animated avatars, but by default it is off, and I haven’t turned it on.
