THE NEW Miscellaneous Talk That Doesn't Deserve A New Thread Thread Thread (Part 1)

I know what you mean. Itโ€™s especially frustrating when I canโ€™t discuss it with the people around me. Most of them, anyway.

May I ask who/what does your pfp represent?

Oh, itโ€™s Albert Camus. He was a French philosopher who contributed to the rise of absurdism. He also wrote The Stranger and The Myth of Sisyphus.

Sorry for the necroliking, guys. I thumbed up a lot of posts in the past because I was unable or unwilling to like them. Also, TIL that @RoboRomb is or will be 17 years old soon. Whenโ€™s your birthday?

Haha, your link doesnโ€™t work anymore, Evo!

Iโ€™ve also been reading the posts about Kiky & Nascar and got the random idea to start reading the old forums. @hhyyrylainen, is there any chance the old forums will ever disappear?

February 7th, 2005. Yes, Iโ€™ll be 17 years old soon. Fun times.

Yeah the image doesnโ€™t work anymore

The forum is hosted proboards, so if they ever went out of business then yeah, but i think the forum is partially archived

Well the, old, old, old forums have disappeared due to the forum host disappearing. The old, old forums and the old forums can disappear if the forum hosting companies that host them disappear.

wow, roboromb is the same age as me, i expected him to be in his 20s by now from the ways he act

What made you think Iโ€™d be in my early 20s?

Eh, just a hunch. I generally thought most people who joined the forum before me is older than me. Contrary to now
But considering that you are still an radical teen. Most of the changes to your mentality could probably be blamed on puberty

Isnโ€™t there a way to preserve the old forums should the company ever go out of business?

Is there a Discourse plugin to make scripts for Discobot so that we no longer need Game Masters in Forum games?

Iโ€™ll turn 22 later this year.

According to proboards license terms, they own all the posts on their hosted forums, and you arenโ€™t allowed to scrape them. Thatโ€™s the reason why we couldnโ€™t keep all the threads and posts when we moved to this forum.

Sounds very complicated to program, so likely no one has. You can search as well for discourse plugins than I can. All I know is that discourse plugins usually have a thread about them on the discourse meta forum:

Iโ€™m getting worried should I ever change to Linux.

You should. Especially if you consider switching in a few years. New hardware has some driver problems, usually, or entirely missing drivers. But new GPUs bought now should have much better experience in a few years. For me I bought AMD because nvidia is so bad with their closed down drivers and supporting the direction desktop Linux is going, wayland. I think they are now finally adding support for it. It definitely shows that nvidia doesnโ€™t really care about Linux gamers, which is why their drivers donโ€™t get new desktop technology support in them in any kind of realistic timeframe. Thatโ€™s why I think going AMD with open source drivers is the only way to go to not get screwed over in the long term on Linux (I guess weโ€™ll see how Intel fares, as far as I know their dedicated GPUs will be supported with open source drivers on Linux). Also consider that you can get older GPUs running with open source drivers as they donโ€™t drop older GPU support just for fun like nvidia does in their official drivers.

Long ago, I was with AMD GPUs, but when I switched to Nvidia, Iโ€™ve no longer had any trouble rendering shadows in my games. Iโ€™m really hesitating whether I should go with Linux or W11. I guess that Iโ€™d stick with W10 until 2025 when I will decide what to do. Itโ€™s a very hard decision.

If you donโ€™t upgrade your hardware you have just two choices in 2025:

  • Keep using Windows 10 with the knowledge that you no longer get security updates and you are then much more likely to get a virus. This is especially problematic if you do serious tasks like online banking with your computer. Or compile software that is distributed to thousands of people.
  • Switch to Linux. Itโ€™s unlikely that any hardware you have now is going to be entirely unsupported by Linux by 2025. Depending on the GPU brand you have different sets of issues, though I kind of hope that wayland will be so good by 2025 that for general desktop use (which is what I do primarily, I only play games a couple of times a week) AMD will be the obvious choice.

What is wayland?

@RoboRomb, have you read/played I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream?

Have you also played System Shock?

I was asking because they do remind me of your dystopian stories although the System Shock series has better endings.

As a matter of fact, I was just working on my dystopian stories. Theyโ€™re coming along quite nicely. To answer your question, I have not.
