How about the Good News Network to lift up the forum?

For one to truly understand the world, they also have to dive into it’s not-so-positive depths…

The US expliciitly has laws to lessen the impact of that fact. Yes, the EU has historically managed to change things for the better for the whole world, but often enough I see stuff happen that would be illegal in the EU just bc my IP address is clearly American. I’ve had a VPN and seen literally different TOS and Cookies menus just because it thought I was in the Netherlands. The borders of what’s legal and not are porous, and, for example, Facebook completely ignored EU laws rather recently and to my knowledge has not been punished. Plus, the EU can’t break up a monopoly that’s based in the US, the US will literally just ignore it. I think we need laws of extradition for companies, but uhh, that’s not likely anytime soon.

the big problem with youtube alternatives is that youtube has an beyond-gargantuan library of almost 20 years of videos that fill almost every single interest gap you can think of. its not like any new better competor has exabytes of storage lying around.
infortunely i’m not going to any youtube alternate while it don’t have hundreds of video essays to my enjoyment.

I mean, the library could just be moved to a new service one day when data storage gets more accessible and cheaper.

I mean… a LOT cheaper, hundreds of youtube videos are uploaded a second, you’d need to scrape youtube at a horrific speed and have the hard drives to store everything. Imagine trying to do that, and now imagine trying to do that without google liking you. It doesn’t add up. Most videos will always be on youtube. The important ones can be moved with the cooperation of creators, nebula has a good portion of the people I want to watch, with enough notable exceptions I use youtube plenty, but a hypothetical really scaled up version could handle basically all the important parts of youtube, but no, no one is taking all of youtube.

Would the 1% “most important” videos being moved be reasonable?

That would be absolutely massive copyright infringement. Only the original creators (or other rights holders) will be able to move the videos to another platform.

Yes, their permission will be required indeed for any actions regarding video-moving being taken.

But otherwise everything between you 2 is the same?

This is concerning. I hope it isn’t a portends of what is going to happen in the future…

We often forget everything we do has consequences, good and bad.

That might also be as humans in general aren’t know for being very patient long-term…

We might learn a thing or two from Galápagos giant tortoises that live over 100 years with regards to patience.

Sadly people aren’t tortoises. And won’t be.

unfortunate but true
i wish people could become tortoises

Wouldn’t that reduce them to non-sapients?

New poll

If politics were to be allowed in the forum, which of those options would you choose for their implementation?
  • One Topic Solution (There’s just one “Politics Thread” topic which is the one and only thread where politics discussions are permitted, note that all rules other than the no-politics rule still apply[including all other solutions])
  • New Category Solution (A “politics” category is created, which allows political discussions only inside the threads of this category, threads of other categories will still have the no-politics rule applied to them)
  • Everywhere Solution (The no-politics rule is simply lifted, political discourse can happen in any thread/topic from this point on)
