Virtual/Digital pets (Tamagotchi in Japan) were all the craze in the early 1990s, one of which eventually became Digimon before it was an anime and franchise. Even the original YuGiOh! Manga had a chapter on V-pets (Chapter 21 - Virtual Pet Duel, Volume 3).
