Recently watched all three three Godfather films; according to the director, Coda was never supposed to be a part of a trilogy, but a standalone film/epilogue.

Coda was never supposed to be a part of a trilogy, but a standalone film/epilogue.

So in truth it’s supposed to be a di-logy + an extra?

Yup. And apparently, the original script was different. Robert Duvall’s character Tom was supposed to be included in the story and be revealed as the secret antagonist, but Paramount did not want to pay Duvall extra to include him. Also, many actresses who were supposed to audition for Mary Carleone had dropped out, and running out of time, the director had to find someone to play Micheal’s daughter at the last minute. Since Francis Coppola was running out of time, his daughter barely had time to rehearse or get good at acting, and she had only two film shoots.
