This dog seems to not have a skeleton though…

New promising parachutes made by utilizing the Japanese art of Kirigami (where paper can be cut as well as folded).

We’ll see if this well develop further or stay where it is now… As seems to happen with many of such “revolutionary” techs.

At least we get cool parachute art out of this.

I wonder if every civ would end up having such techs be similarly shaped, so for instance an alien gear still looks very much like a gear…

I mean, the underlying physics principles are constant throughout the universe, so one would expect there to be more of a matter of differences of form over differences of function.

Do you think windmills and stuff would still look similar on alien worlds?

Maybe. I wonder if a sapient spider species would make windmills out of webs?

Wouldn’t they just move with the air and not harness energy from it?

Maybe they figure out to make better materials from their webbing for more efficient wind energy transfer? Or use a combination of materials, such as leaves, sticks, and webbing?

Maybe even in very windy areas, sentient spiders can spin web parachutes, like in The Future is Wild?
There are only so many shapes that would effectively catch wind, so, theoretically, there would be many similarities between early Civ machines on different planets. Same with gears. It will likely be the more complex machines and the aesthetics where they differentiate.
Well, aware spiders already balloon, amongst other things.

They could use having more control over the parachutes though…

Would this affect the invention of parachutes for sentient/sapient spiders?

Of course, though not sure if it would help with powered flight…
