Apparently, electrolysis occurs naturally in the ocean, and, amongst other things, it produces pockets of Aerobic life. Very interesting.

So should there be a small amounts of oxygen production coming from ocean floor patches?

If I understand it correctly, there should be a lot of oxygen on the surface, less in the middle, and patches of higher oxygen spread around the sea floor, which, like hydrothermal vents, would be densely populated oases in the otherwise sparsely populated deep sea floor, capable of supporting macroscopic aerobic life far from the oxygen provided by plants. Oxygen from those spots could possibly even predate the great oxidation of the surface.

Eventually, probably, but I don’t think it is worth delaying Multicellular for. I would love t see this make it into later stages though. Imagine how an Underwater Civ could potentially make use of this.
