When they learn to make multi part tools

you can make a decent spear by sharpening a stick and heating it in a fire to harden it, using a second material isn’t required

Well putting a sharp stone at it’s end would sure make for an extra deadly weapon

When I was like 6-8 years old I came up with the idea that every animal no matter how small or large is conscious and everyone’s only okay with eating each other because no one can understand species other than their own.

Tbf even if not correct we would probably eat other animals a lot less if they could communicate in ways indicative of advanced intelligence.

Honestly, consciousness just being a byproduct of having a brain at all is kind of horrifying. It means that nearly over a trillion thinking and feeling agents are snuffed out on the regular, whether eaten by another animal or by natural disasters.

It also means that suffering is the rule, not the exception.

What would we really be without consciousness?

Yeah, I personally think that consciousness is needed for most complex animals to function. Even if they’re less smart they probably still feel and experience.
