I recall it being said that hair evolved from primitive whiskers, not scales.

Synapsids never had scales, they had glandular skin, from the glands of which hair developed.

So I suppose if one does not have scales in their in-game organism, it will be a lot harder to develop something different than bare skin?

I think there will be a choice between glandular skin, which will allow the development of fur, mammary glands, quills and sweat glands. And scales, which will allow the development of osteoderms, pycnofibers, protofeathers and feathers.

Scales might also allow dentine scales, like in sharks. Though it’s a little non LAWK for things on land

These are fish scales and they are very different from the scales of amniotes.

Maybe some pycnofibers did evolve into quills, but we may be lacking fossils of animals with such forms. It could make for a good nonlawk feature for sure…

They are quite similar to hair, pycnofiber whiskers might also be possible. Milk does need glands though

I don’t think it’s possible to produce sweat or sweat without external glands, and I think we should leave that to furry creatures for some balance.
