I hope something similar does not happen again during the creation/discovery of g-block elements (elements 121-138) in period 8.

Why even bother discovering these elements if they wonโt have an use really?

Short: Because science.
Long Answer: The actual g-block and period 8 elements may end up having different properties than what we predict, which would help update our physics models and our understanding of science. Plus, those who create/discover the elements have a larger say in the naming of the elements (unless this has been changed).

Current models say the period 8 elements may not follow the same predictable patterns as the previous 7 periods, with the different period 8 atomic orbital blocks being blurred.
