Well, itās just that although he was out of line for harrassing the customer, I still felt some pity for him as running a restaurant isnāt easy financially speaking. This may not have been the case in the US, but where Iām from, when I was younger, tipping was considered a privilege, not a right. But I feel like it is explicitly demanded nowadays.

The US in most states has explicit provisions in the law allowing restaurant and similar employers to pay their servers less than minimum wage on the assumption that customers will make up the difference in tips. This means servers are financially reliant on you tipping well. It is considered quite rude to not tip at all. this seems to be changing, for example California has laws preventing you from underpaying people just cause they might get tips, but itās slow change.
Hmm⦠I donāt think we have that in Canada (paying under minimal wage outside of prison) or at least not in my province. Someone I know actually had a higher salary thanks to tipping.
