0.8.3 Release Candidate Testing

We are once again about to release a new Thrive version next week, and as usual we have a public test build this week. The biggest things to be noticed in this build are the achievements added for the microbe stage to encourage trying out various different strategies, and the upgrades to the multicellular stage prototype. Besides those headline features we have a long list of small and some big bug fixes as well as smaller new features and many balance tweaks.

It took a bit of extra time for this new release due to the summer break that cut down on the available development time.

To access the beta build, you need to enable the Thrive Launcher option for showing them. Then you can pick the beta version in the Thrive version selector to play. The Mac build is available this time at the same time as the other builds.

Please provide any feedback you have on this test build. We are especially interested in hearing about the game balance and how the achievements feel.

I have noticed for some reason certain microbes (I think it’s only the player species doing that) seem to render a faint square of darker colour below them, like so

It’s the ripple effect.

And that has been noticed before but no issue opened as I thought that the author of the effect would fix it soon.

I’ve opened an issue now:

I noticed that if you engulf a small microbe as an eukaryote, instead of disappearing the ingested matter bar will just stay at “0.0” and keep giving your cell resources.

Did the situation match this description: Ingested matter bar / engulfed object can get stuck being engulfed with 0 size remaining · Issue #4794 · Revolutionary-Games/Thrive · GitHub ?

It happened to my cell after it ingested a 1-hex-cytoplasm cell, though the reason for the bug is probably roughly the same.

Related to this, do you have a save file that could be loaded to see this problem? That would make it much easier to solve the bug.

I looked at the file again to see what sort of microbe exactly caused the glitched bar to persist and it turned out to just be a single-hex thylkakoid. :person_facepalming: on my side.
I also noticed that meteoroid impacts seem to be grouped alongside eruption events in the geologic activity setting in advanced settings of world creation, which seems strange since meteorite impact rates should be independent from the geology of a planet. Perhaps the settings should be renamed to “random event activity” or something along these lines?

I was replying to the ripple effect square problem. I got hold of the author of the effect and they asked how to easily trigger the problem. So we would really like a save that immediately shows the ripple effect visible square problem.

It doesn’t affect all events so that description would also be incorrect.

Here is the file for the square ripple glitch:

Out of curiosity: does selecting the beta-non stable version in Steam lead to this same build?

Edit: I think I can answer my own question, version is labelled 0.8.3.0-rc1.

Point one: An achievement mentions reaching gen 15 on medium difficulty, which does not exist.

I assume it is called “normal” in the game, then if the medium name is not right?

Precisely, yes.

Point 2: The ripple effect looks nice, but just disappeared as soon as I reproduced and migrated once. Known problem?

How did it disappear? It disappearing has not been reported even once before. Rather there’s been reports about a faint square being visible around cells (so it being more visible than it should).

My mistake: looks like it is just much less visible in the deep sea biomes besides the hydrothermal vents!

Edit: Something else does occur now: it’s quite annoying that the undo button completely undoes everything you do in a row in the tolerance screen, even multiple different tolerances.

I’ve noticed my cell colony seems to be creating some extracellular matrixes before the cells they connect to pop up themselves

I’m pretty sure that is the same as before. All tolerance edits are considered edits to the tolerances property (this causes all of the separate sliders to be clumped together), and as you don’t want to undo 100 individual slider changes with the tolerances all subsequent tolerance changes are combined into a single undo/redo step.

@dligr probably noticed the same thing now and already opened a pull request:

Edit: I made a fix for the wrong text in the achievements:

By the way, are the ripples supposed to be for small cells? Since I couldn’t see them with larger ones.

Why doesn’t hydrogen sulfide disappear in surface biomes after oxygenation? (And there is quite a bit of it in all biomes)
I also noticed a bug related to the fact that there is an incredible amount of hydrogen sulfide in the hydrothermal vent biome (about 100 units (for comparison, phosphates in most biomes are only 20 units))
