Isn’t air generally colder the higher you go? How come could it become so hot that a creature from the surface would die from overheating? Flying into a volcanic ash column?

Well, you could have something that is extremely hard to heat with visible light. As far as UV goes, higher up is brighter, and light will heat you up. Cancer is obviously not caused by heat, it it’ll have to be somethign species, but yk, not impossible, just, real dumbly specific.

Yeah, ozone layer apparently heats up considerably…

I realize that most achievements are completely jokes. But I will absolutely require there to be some kind of way that an achievement could be in the game. I had to delete an achievement that was purely about re-provoking a discussion here on the forums.

That’s why it’s a challenge.

This would probably be very difficult to achieve. I don’t know how you’d do it. I suppose you could make something that’s extremely intolerant of heat, then fly it up past a certain threshold. It dies and the achievement procs. Kinda cheaty though.

Then you’d probably have to know of the achievement beforehand…

Speaking of, should the player be aware of all the achievements before, well, achieving them, or should some of them be out of the view of a fresh eye?

that’d be real fun… The steam setup is that you can have any number of achievements hidden ,but you can see them if you want to, not even like on a wiki, just in steam. Having some truly secret undocumented ones could be fun, but not many, that’s kinda unfair. They’d have to be REALLY good imo.

And really hard to achieve… and possibly being some sort of a reference to something…

if the temperature is high enough. and you stay there long enough. and you can’t sweat. you can overheat in the ozone layer. if the atmosphere is thicker, and has lots of oxygen, there would be more ozone. it may be easier to fly up there. the altitude that has ozone may be dense enough to still support flight.

Actually, I think a Reverse Icarus might be a more interesting and more achieveable achievement; fly so low you overheat and die. The obvious way to get the achievement is to fly over a volcano and get cooked.

Or live in some sort of a hellish word where the only pleasent place are mountaintops.

or to evolve to tolerate extreme cold very well because you spend all of your time on the tops of mountains and in storm clouds then fly down to a warm summer day and overheat. i kinda feel like flying down into a volcano or up into a freak weather occurrence don’t count as death by flying up, or down, they are deaths by volcanos or the weather, respectively, imo.

Right, as those aren’t caused by altitude change…

Icarus wasn’t killed by over heating exactly, the heat caused him to fall into the ocean, and then he drowned. Maybe: Pass out from flying to high (low oxygen instead of the sun for this) while flying over the ocean and drown?

you can wake up before impact. or get tired and not fly that high in the first place. and you can die due to the impact with the water. its like concrete after some height.

He did wake up, his wax wings with too few feathers to fly had enough left that, having gotten wet, they were heavy enough to pull him under.

Or live in some sort of hellish world where the atmosphere is extremely thick, hot, dense, and acidic, such that you can’t even survive except by being so far above the surface that you’re in the upper atmosphere.

This habitat in itself is not much better than the surface, as even water is too scarce to sustain the hardiest life.
