I meant more that elephant skulls were likely behind cyclops arising as mythical creatures.

That is an old and disputed theory. I believe the current leading theory is it was based on smiths.

There are 3 separate groups of cyclopes in Greek mythology, 2 of which are well known for there smithing skills. Smiths at that time did not know how to make googles, so they would cover one eye, so that if something happened to the eye they were using to see their work with, at least the other eye would be okay. There are a few other theories but most now involve some sort of people or statues that from a distance were mistaken for being alive being responsible (the Laestrygonians who shared the island with the cyclopes are thought to have been the Giants of Mont’e Prama.
