Anyone ever heard of Xenophyophores?

They are, quite possibly, the weirdest creatures I have ever heard of, and I figured you guys might appreciate them.

Other than being an example of just how weird life can get (and how big single celled creatures can get), I’m not sure. They have so many cool properties, but given how fragile they are…

Actually, they look more like a kind of fungi or sponge rather than a single cell.

It does. That’s what’s weird about them: scientists don’t know a whole lot but one of the things they have figured out is that Xenophyophores are actually single cells stretched over a skeleton composed of sediment into a sponge like shape, to maximize surface area.
