Anyone ever heard of Xenophyophores?

They are, quite possibly, the weirdest creatures I have ever heard of, and I figured you guys might appreciate them.

Other than being an example of just how weird life can get (and how big single celled creatures can get), Iโ€™m not sure. They have so many cool properties, but given how fragile they areโ€ฆ

Actually, they look more like a kind of fungi or sponge rather than a single cell.

It does. Thatโ€™s whatโ€™s weird about them: scientists donโ€™t know a whole lot but one of the things they have figured out is that Xenophyophores are actually single cells stretched over a skeleton composed of sediment into a sponge like shape, to maximize surface area.
