Cell layers

it would be cool if there were layers of the cells in the editor so organelles could not be touching anything on their layer but as long as there was something directly above or below it it could be there and it would extend the cells into the third dimension. this could also be used so that each organelle above a photosynthesizing organelle reduces the light that reaches said organelle and have players make cells like stentors and cells that require a hole through them to work and have the empty hexes be rendered as empty. this would likely be best left for when the 3D membranes are implemented due to the fact that it extends the cells into the third dimension

the cell layers thing would be useful for keeping track of osmoregulation costs based off of surface area and make the transition from 2D to 3D easier and with 3D membranes it would make more sense than 2D cells. it would also drastically increase the amount of viable cells as well as make players make more realistically viable cells by placing photosynthetic organelles near the top of the cell instead of just literally anywhere on the cell. it would also add ways to make early multicellular organisms have digestive tracts by making cells be able to have holes in them like in real life. another thing it would be good for is making organisms have circulatory systems as early as possible far easier
