I got wedged between two of my own species that were also a bit pinned by rocks. After a while I grew a new cell that overlapped one of them which led to constant colliding sounds and loss of control.

If you meant the (stationary) rocks, that is indeed weird since there should have been some work done on preventing growth of cells overlapping with those

No, this is after they managed to wiggle out of the rocks. When it happened they were on both sides of me (preventing any movement on my part).

Actually there hasn’t been any work done on that…
Usually the physics system pushes newly grown cells so that they stop overlapping, but in complex situations with multiple nearby cell colonies, it can fail and things get stuck in the physics engine.
I think I’ve been meaning to open an issue for this but I don’t think I have yet, otherwise I would link one.
