Hi. I just created an account, but have been playing thrive since… I do not know how many years, only that there was only the monocell gameplay (perhaps multicellular prototype too, I don’t remember). Got to say I’m positively surprised that such an ambitious project is still actively developped, congrats! Also, I really like the current direction thrive takes on the various balancing mechanics, but have noticed that a single chemosynthesis parts makes your cell completely immune to Hydrogen Sulfide, which means there are no real reason to not use one.
Specialisation (which is relatively new and is going to be stronger it seems) may counter balance this a bit, but I highly doubt it will counter the strong advantage of full H2S immunity.
I do not know how things work in real life on this regard (not a biologist) but from a gameplay perspective, I can’t help thinking there could be some kind of H2S environmental resistance, in a similar way to the UV and O2 resistances, although that would make initial start much harder. I guess a possible way to counter this would be to have most other parts to have a negative resistance.
That’s all. I deleted my github account years ago, and refuse to go on discord, so forum is the only way for me to share that thought. Maybe it was already discussed, though, if so, forgive me for bringing it back.

Welcome to the forum @freem !
I also think the way Hydrogen Sulfide tolerance has been handled could have been done better, however I am not sure wherever at this moment the developers would have the time or will to improve upon the system we have at hand.
I envision that a better system would function more similarly to how the Oxygen bar functions in Thrive 1.1.0, that being that it’s tolerance slider’s max value ends a long way short of 100% (in this case perhaps the %s would be the % of cell storage filled and not the % in the patch) and you’d need to add more chemosynthesis proteins/plasts to raise it even more.
There is an in-progress change to make a single hydrogen sulfide organelle not offer full protection for large cells, however it wasn’t completed in time for 1.1.0 so it will hopefully be completed for some future release:
I never thought it should be done instantly, I know how hard it is to contribute to a game, where you need to find the right spot between balance and fun (oh, and performances, too!). In this case, there’s also a (well appreciated) effort to be as scientifically accurate as possible, makes the effort even more impressive, if you ask me.
All I wanted was to make sure the idea had crossed some minds, and apparently it already did, a while ago, this is perfect. I will happily wait more, and still enjoy the game’s releases in the meantime. If one wants challenge, one can always choose to not use it, after all, since this is a single-player game.

…Honestly pretty sure a whole lot of people don’t add chemosyntetic organelles to their cells
It’s important to keep in mind that IRL “the earliest microbes” and “LUCA” are very much not the same thing. LUCA certainly came sometime after what we would recognise as the start of life.
But the IRL LUCA is indeed suggested to have been a chemo-litho-autotroph, though using H2 instead of H2S.

Maybe those two autotrophy options being unlocked from the very beginning could be a stand-in for how they were used in the LUCA’s past?
Well, the main thing of course is that your Thrive world is not the same as Earth, so it being different is not surprising. But I guess you mean the fact that those metabolisms are already available from the start right now?

Yes that’s what I meant. Also wouldn’t different starts technically be non-lawk?
