Is it possible for dragons to evolve from lizards with frills on their back?

After all, the frills on lizards are muscular. At first, they would be for intimidation or something. But put some bones in them and make them bigger and they’re wings! But can that happen?

In real life, most likely not as it’s pretty hard to get bones in places where none were ever present. In Thrive, I guess this would be significantly easier to achieve…

not really, sadly frills do not have anything like the skeletal structure of a limb. Really, if you want dragons, start six-limbed.

Or you can have the two-legged ones instead.

Yeah totally, but if we’re talking about anything but the western standard dragons you can look to various historical dragons with no limbs and say a snake is a dragon. Flying snakes exist if you can about flight over all other things, titanoboas if you like size, and spitting cobras if you require breath weapons. If we like two legged dragons, I’d argue a quetzalcoatlus is a dragon.

And not to mention Yi Qi…

So… I geuss we can say birds are not only dinosaurs… but dragons?

Maybe you could consider them dragons… but for most that’s a too large stretch.

No one has brought up any scientific sources for this so I’m throwing this thread out of Science! category. Also I’m pretty sure dragons have been asked about before but I couldn’t quickly find the relevant thread with the forums search.

Perhaps something related to “evolving fire breath”?
