Anyways, how do you guys think mass extinction events will be handled? Do you think they’d even be in place? Although we do have situations that mess with the climate, most of them usually have some type of useful impact. Like raising carbon dioxide and such… But what about mass extinctions that wipe out 50-90% of all species? Would it even be fair to include from a video-game perspective?

I recall it was said that mass extinction would be implemented but the player would always have the chance to survive because otherwise it’s just a random RNG death which wouldn’t be fun. Also
On topic: The player could be given enough leeway in the editor to make their species into something that can survive the disaster.

Same here, it could be hidden somewhere most player wouldn’t look.
Speaking of this, how will upscaling/downscaling your creation in size work with MP?

I would like to add that even if there is an advance warning of some event, the question behind this is to say what exactly will happen or to say that something big is happening that will hurt?
The first option is probably fairer.
Additionally, I think that if the player survives, it might be worth giving a small bonus (a bit cheaper MP) for surviving, similar to the increase in species diversity after an extinction event, as a kind of compensation for changing the player’s choice to survive the event.

So it could be like that if they player doesn’t choose to avoid the impact, they risk going extinct, but they also still have more MP available in the end?

I was actually thinking more about a discount on buying in MP, being in the fact that MP will always be at 100 no matter the situation.
But it’s not a bad idea to use it as a kind of risk and reward.

Would also make the system more engaging. Win-Win it sounds for me!
The closest thing to a plan here is Deus’ macroscopic editor concept. General idea is there’s essentially a slider to scale up/down your whole organism at the cost of MP. It might not be super expensive. But you would probably need to make some changes to your structure for example in order to survive becoming a lot larger.
Increasing diversity after mass extinctions happens because of suddenly open niches. This should work automatically in Thrive as well.
But I could see us maybe adding some discount on MP right when the disaster happens, to make sure you can actually change enough to survive it.

How much would be handled by the size change alone? Would you need to change the heartbeat rate by yourself for example?
