Mutation one: Tolerance outside wetter environments for drier environments.

Mutation two: Spores on aquatic moss spend time developing into mosslings before being flung into the ocean to survive and find other moss to lock roots with to form their own mats seperate of their own parent mat.

You could just wait some time for the ability to react to return.

  1. Insert the silica parts together with lignin so that it is more resistant to (mainly biological) damage (like horsetails)
  2. Addressing the salt problem with a strategy called osmotic regulation (a strategy of Tamarix trees - transferring salts to the cuticle layer on the outside of the plant - also indirectly serves as a pest repellent)

I suppose the herbivores will need heavier weapons to consume your species from now on.

Yes I do think everyone will have to invest in more drastic mutations soon..

An event is probably going to happen not too far aswell.

Well I think we are waiting for @JustaDumbThriver and we can move on to the next round where you guys can finally change the names of your creatures.

By the way with the waters filling up the world shouldnโ€™t there be a whole bunch of ex-surface detritus on the sea floor from the flood event?

Yep. Although theyโ€™re far too deep for the survivors to reach by now, all of the ocean patches (Except for the open ocean) used to be on land before the flooding.

Do the archae use them though?

No, but they consume the molecules those decomposing animals and plants release.

Maybe thatโ€™ll be relevant laterโ€ฆ

I suppose weโ€™ll be getting some extra heating to this scarred worldโ€ฆ

How many times would my species need to extended the mouth and eyes in order to look similar to Tullimonstrum?

I feel like this kind of eyes is a massive weak spot to be aimed upon by predators

I wonder how Hammerhead sharks deal with this issue?

What he said.

Personally I donโ€™t see the use for the extended mouth unless youโ€™re snaking out food from tight spaces, there isnโ€™t any prey in the water and nobody feels like taking the niche of fish even though thereโ€™s tons of niches for it.

You have to specify the parameters of your mutations and Iโ€™ll decide from there. If you donโ€™t specify Iโ€™ll keep it vague for abstraction reasons.

To be fair the tully monster lived in estuaries and not open oceans iirc
