The bigger and more complex the plant, the more light it needs. Simpler and smaller photosynthesizers could potentially get away with using moonlight. At least, that is the theory being researched currently.

I suppose the night side would pretty much always end up with a lower amount of biomass?

Unless it was an oxygenless iron rich planet, it would have to be. In a world without oxygen, I believe Iron Breathers could get fairly big and complex, and would not care about light. Too bad most iron breathing organisms are oxygen intolerant.

Could they still have some success if they did become oxygen tolerant?
