THE NEW Miscellaneous Talk That Doesn't Deserve A New Thread Thread Thread (Part 3)

Tbh not sure some of it’s functions would be ever used outside of “testing” purposes

The post formats don’t support CSS tho (I tried and it didn’t work)

What could we use CSS for here?

But that’s totally unrelated to markdown?

People could totally break the site if allowed to write any CSS they want.

So that’s why it hasn’t been added.

What happens when 2 mediapieces share a name

It does not help that Avatar Book 3: Fire and the third Avatar film both have Fire in their title… Even Wikipedia says this:

Well at least they aren’t 100% identical

And then there is the X-COM 2’s Avatar Project, which is completely unrelated to the other two Avatar franchises.

That’s a whole lot of avatars existing at the same time! (or something…)

Avatar Aang, Na`vi Avatar Body Jake Sully, and X-COM Avatar all pointing at each other…

And there are probably more just not as well known…

whelp… lets use our brains. Correlation != causation. if you’re taller, you’re likely better fed and thus more likely to have parents with the money to buy good food or the free time to make food or both. if you’re taller in, say, the USA, you’re likely of european or west african descent (northern europe and the parts of west africa black americans come from have a lot of tall genes, just coincidentally), and while black americans aren’t particularly privileged, biasing towards white and black people and away from other kinds of folks still increases the average privilege levels because white people are a higher percentage, and hell, black americans speak english at a native level a higher percentage of the time than other nonwhite groups since slavery was less recent and more forcefully removed prior language than most diasporas. if you’re taller, many would consider you more attractive, which could help you be more successful in life, arguably. taller people are also more likely to be men, and while higher education is starting to bias female demographically, education outcomes are still very much biased towards men, who are on average granted more patience and expected to go further, thus receiving a bit more support.

on an entirely unrelated note:
IQ tests arent even a decent measure of education quality, they have bias above and beyond the bias inherent in education, and often, for example, score comparably educated women lower than men, and people from outside the culture which the test came from lower than the dominant culture. Accounting for this bias is very hard, and most IQ test designers have zero investment doing so since it involves admitting failure, would be costly and hard, and changing the questions to make, say, white men score lower would be very very unpopular with decision makers, who are disproportionally white men.

point being: genetic links are extremely hard to prove, and society is very biased in lots of random directions. I’d love to know which genes correlate with intelligence, because im sure they’re out there, reaping the advantages of genetic diversity includes making thinkers who don’t waste their time thinking through complex options, and making those who are bad at solving specific problems due to thinking too generally, etc. people like that in your tribe would help broaden the problems your tribe could think through or act decisively about. issue is we can’t even measure intelligence, let alone find unbiased groups to check the genes and intelligence of, any sample you find is gonna be super biased because the world is and always has been. anyhow. disappointing but that study gives us roughly no new information.

no worse than making real AGI! if we manage to give them rights early i think it’d be a positive, especially if we can avoid exploitation or superinteligence with the power to kill everyone like AGI would. Still a massive minefield and would cause profound suffering at some point, but like, so does mcdonalds and air travel and boomers still being alive in 2026 and most people arent trying to stop those things, so maybe harmful side effects are normal.

one of my favorite things about all old-school forums. Discourse is very compact and modern and slick etc (with a theme like this forum, it’s belgium pretty too) but it sometimes lacks that janky personality i think forums should have.

i think many, many planets would be habitable to cyanobacteria with even a shallow ocean artificially added. The only other thing you’d need is an atmosphere the right thickness and temperature and enough magnetosphere to uh, have the aforementioned atmosphere.

life would almost certainly evolve in the ocean, side doesn’t matter. life would spread to all hydrothermal vents or whatever before it got interesting at all, then complex photosynthetic colonies, and all multicellular life would likely evolve near the terminator tbh.

edit 1 second after posting: god this post is long. Sorry i havent posted anything substantial in over a month, i just responded to everything interesting in the new misc talk at once. congrats on the new thread btw.

Okay I really see now why Hhyyrylainen said CSS would break the forum

I can see people making many Nintendo characters art using CCS…

Would nintendo be petty enough to go after us for that or would they be too busy with other things?

if it made money they would, but no, it’s just fanart, no one can stop that.
