With how cute they look, it would definitely have been a great addition to the contest!

Convergent evolution baby!

It is a species that only preys on jellyfish and their relatives.
What is unique about it is that it is a nympe parasite of a specific type of jellyfish called Zanclea - which are themselves a type of symbiont of corals, clams and especially Bryozoa

a very weird and unexplored of the true jellyfish

I BRELGIUMING LOVE PHYLLIROE

convergent evolution! Think about dolphins, pretty fish shaped, huh? itโ€™s because if you have a rear paddle or tail to propel you and any number of limbs to stabilize you, fish shape is best shape. Of course, phylliroe lacks the limbsโ€ฆ so it uses itโ€™s head, lmao.

Maybe Phylliroe will eventually evolve wing-like limbs like Sea Angels?

unessecary tbh, they fill a pelagic predator niche, where developed fins for propulsion are inferior to a developed tail and simple little stabilizer fins. look at tuna and sharks, dirt simple single pair of fins, much like the head-fin of a phylliroe, just closer to the center of mass. im unsure how strong the evolutionairy pressure is to move the fins to the center of mass, but it canโ€™t be that strong.

Is there a reason ichtyosaurs kept their hind flippers but cetacians didnโ€™t?

I found this update to the post very funny. Mainly because I was expecting this outcome when I started reading the top of your post.
