Thrive Version History Video (in the Making)

I’m trying to recreate a Version History video that is similar to the one about early times of Thrive where Oliveriver goes through every Thrive release from 0.0.1 to 0.3.1:

In the last three weeks, I played almost every Thrive version (0.0.1 to 1.0.0) and recorded most of the new features I thought I should include in each version (with a few silly stuff). I finally finished it all and, now, I am currently in the phase of editing the video. However, I need your feedback to make it better and make sure I’m doing it right.

Here’s one of the first things I need help with. As I expected, the current video may be too long for presenting. Almost an hour even in the first editing! If that would be an issue, I could reduce the length a little more (e.g. cutting game cutscenes to show them briefly and etc.).

This is how long each part currently takes

Legacy - 04:31
0.3.x - 02:53
0.4.x - 05:13
0.5.x - 16:40
0.6.x - 13:36
0.7.x - 05:45
0.8.x - 07:32
0.9.x - 03:44
Extras - 01:00 (probably)

Once I add some text flavor to it, I’m optimistic enough to share an early version of the video to show you all for the first time!

P.S. I’m still missing Thrive 0.2.0. If you have it or you know anyone who has it, I would really appreciate that you shared it with me. Additionally, if you can run Thrive 0.3.0 without it crashing, I would be more than happy to get a recorded footage of the 1-minute gameplay from you (I will probably end up using the old footage as a last resort).

There is nothing wrong with an hour long video. If you want to, maybe you can divide the hour long video into multiple separate videos? One video is Legacy to 0.4.X, the second video is 0.5.X, the third video is 0.6.X, and the last video is 0.7.X to Extras.

I think if possible it’d be the best to keep the video in one part

If we got permission, I’d love to showcase this video when done on our Youtube channel. But I think for that we would need a quite cut down version like on the order of 15-20 minutes max.

As there’s the old version history video all the legacy versions could be cut from the new video. Or even a new “Thrive legacy versions showcase” video could be made (our channel doesn’t have that many videos to upload so it taking multiple uploads to get through all the “content” wouldn’t be a problem).

Would we also want to YT-shortify the video(s) or is that too much?

YT shorts get pretty high views in comparison to regular videos in general. I think a Thrive version showcase with a YT short every week would be great for the sustainability of Thrive’s channel.

Btw, I’ll try to make the proper 20-min version of my video for non-legacy as part 2. Part 1 will be reserved for Legacy versions and Extras. I’ll probably have a longer video uploaded with all releases in more detail from another source for those who would enjoy watching it after that (I definitely do!).

For Extras section, I imagine getting prototypes with no official release number. So far, I have:
-AI Editor Prototype (probably not gonna be in the video because I’m confused)
-Microbe Editor Prototype (4 releases numbered from 0.1.5 to 0.1.8, I will only cover last one as it has all features of other three)
-Microbe Ecosystem Prototype (non-final version) by UntrustedLife and existing video about it

If you have other protoypes that I missed which are worth including, I am willing to add them in Part 1!

Are you sure you would be able to edit together such a version short each week?

Yes, I could do that but that is not my main goal. If the devs would like that I am in for it.

I was meaning more that the channel could upload a YT short about Thrive 0.0.1 for 1st week by using existing video footage then Thrive 0.0.2 for 2nd week and etc. There isn’t much YT shorts in the channel currently.

The video I’m currently making is separate from that.

I know. When do you expect to release the first video (since it seems like the project will be split into many parts)?

I expect it will take a few days to complete the first video and a week or more for the second one if I go with the current pace.

At the end of this year or around this time in 2027 would you be interested in making a similar project but for the 1.X.X era releases?

That I can’t be so sure about. While almost reaching the finish of the current project was a real reliever, this project drained me greatly and I might be busy with my university study at that time. I think only time will tell!

By the way I get that you’ve agreed by now that those videos will go to the RG channel right? Will they be only there or also on your channel (if you have one)?

Ah. Did hhyyrylainen ask for my permission? Yes, I accept it. I don’t plan to release them on another channel. As for the longer 1-hour version, I haven’t decided on where to upload it yet.

Since the content will already be in form of the split up videos I’m not sure there’s much of a point of making a “compilation” video

Are you suggesting that RG should go with YT shorts and not regular videos in two parts? I think it will be hard to find all YT shorts in the correct order as they will be spread-out.

No I meant the full video of ALL the version will probably not be needed assuming the sections 15-20 mins long (as Hhyyrylainen suggested) are what gets uploaded

That’s true. I think I should express myself more clearly. I will make two videos that RG can upload (Part 1: Legacy, Part 2: Post-Legacy). But I’m also planning to make the long video (with more stuff to look at which has all versions and all uncut features I imagine) that is not gonna be in RG. That’s just the video I will make for fun.

Oh, so you WILL upload the long one on your channel?

I haven’t determined yet. I don’t know how RG would feel about a full video on another channel.
