We all know the tree of life can get extremely cluttered the further you progress in the game. I suggest a feature where players select a spieces, make it a domain root, name and color code the domain, and then all descendants of that spieces is in that domain. This would help players manually group spieces into domains. Players could then select a node inside a domain and make it a sub-domain/kingdom root, and so on. Players could also turn on/off domains, kingdoms, etc. or search which domain/etc. a certain spieces is in. It requires no ai Since the player is deciding what they are called, what color, and where they start, etc.. Iβd really like to see this in the game and get some feedback.
Interesting idea. Ability to highlight or put a box around certain clades would be a good idea, like finding paraphylytic groups.
However, we also really need an way to search for species by typing their names, akin to how a drop down selection of names come up with discourse or using @ symbol.
FYI. The traditional Linnaean hierarchy is not really used any more beyond as a guide, as there are hundreds of clades now due to sequencing.
Hm. Lemme think about this. Well, the player could search the name of the spieces and then it shows the organisms domain, sub-domain, kingdom, etc..
What do you think?
Sound like it could work. The question is it would be easy to program and implement. I donβt know with the current timeline for trying to finish Multicellular if it could be implemented any time soon. However, since anyone can make a pull request due to Thrive being open source, you could also try to make the test feature yourself and put it on GitHub. If the devs like it, then it could be implemented in the game from that channel.
Well, Iβm not that good on coding yet. I know a bit of python, and thatβs it.
Iβd like too make it when I learn C#, though. Maybe Iβll join the team when I can.
Welcome to the forums, @PineaAutotrophis !
I think in general having Domains, Kingdoms, Phylums, etc. would be great. I do wonder if that should wait until later though, when the divisions become clearer. Maybe early Macroscopic, after microbial life has more or less defined its miches and Plants, Animals, and whatever else have clearly separate macroscopic lineages.
Thanks for the support since I just joined tonight. Anyways, it does make sence to leave this feature to the early macroscopic, although my current tree is already completely unreadable.
What is you think
The problem with adding anything to the current tree of life is that the one who wrote it left the team and other devs hence donβt know how 2 safely modify its codeβ¦
I donβt really think it is a safety problemβ¦ It is a pretty complex feature but its code doesnβt look that scary to me, though it would still be quite difficult for someone else to modify. Still, the biggest problem is that nobody who can program is enthusiastic about modifying the feature.
Welcome to the forums, @PineaAutotrophis!
Personally I think it would be fun to categorize each independent entry of the Multicellular Stage as a separate βKingdomβ that at least gets added as a label on that species.
But I think there are other features the tree needs more:
- Being able to jump to specific species on the three through search or through links from other pages.
- An option to prune out fully extinct lines from being shown.
And as hhyyrylainen said, there just isnβt anybody working on the tree right now.
I presume then this would only get done once more important things for the projectβs survival are coded in 1st
So like this will be done when you guys actually fix the camera angle so I can actually see my mate in the multicellular/sexual stage so I can actually enter the editor?!
β¦You can do see the mate tho? Thereβs even a signal agent command to summon one
I sommoned it but it and Iβm so big I can only see a fraction on it and gammates need to home and not float uselessly
I presume a command to have the gametes move to u could be usefulβ¦
We canβt zoom out the camera any more without extremely visible entity spawn pop in and compound cloud flickering appearing. So the zoom out max is what it can be without reworking multiple microbe stage systems.
This is partially why I reduced the cell count needed for macroscopic to 15, as you are not meant to make much bigger colonies than that due to the camera problems.
I am pretty sure if you zoomed out even further the game would crash?
Back to the subject of the evolution tree
β¦Could you clarify exactly what do you want to talk about in regards to it?
Nah, it wouldnβt crash, just be a visually unpleasant mess with clouds flickering around the edges and a ton of stuff just popping into existence on the edges of the screen.
