1.6.0 Release Candidate Testing

Some time has passed once again and it is time for a new Thrive release seen. As usual we have a public test build available today and the release is in one week so that we can fix all the problems everyone is sure to find with the test build. You will find a lot of major changes if you play this new version as is visible from the version number jump. We have new multicellular reproduction modes and improvements to previous ones, colony membranes now stretch towards colony members making gaps smaller, and we have initial auto-evo implementation for the multicellular stage! Besides the highlight features there are of course again a very long list of smaller changes and bugfixes, but we won’t spoil those yet, they will be covered by the devblog coming out at the same time as the release.

Before anyone plays the new build, a word of warning to users of slightly older GPUs: due to a Godot Engine update, some cards that previously worked fine with Vulkan are now detected as unsupported. So if you have such a GPU you’ll need to force the OpenGL safety mode on (can be done in the Thrive Launcher). We are hoping that Godot 4.8 resolves this situation, but it is not out yet so we cannot update this Thrive release to use that.

To access the beta build, you need to enable the Thrive Launcher option for showing them. Then you can pick the beta version in the Thrive version selector to play. The store versions of Thrive also have this new beta version available to select.

Please provide any feedback you have on this test build. We are especially interested in any auto-evo run failures and in general how the performance of auto-evo is in multicellular. We are aware of some minor bugs in the membrane stretch system already and will try to fix them next week. Also loading an older save with mass budding size of 1 can give an error upon entering the editor.

alr, i got feedback! when i chose mass budding to test it out, i selected 11 just for fun, and when i was born, me and my parent cell both only had 5, idk if thats intentional or not, but mainly it looks like i didnt even have collisions

i just noclipped trough the chunk. i think i bugged the game out when selecting that big of a birth size…

edit: with 2 cells on mass budding it works perfectly, so it was definitely the 11 cells on birth that caused it

you should probably share the savefile

it sometimes happens with the pfps of people, it will come back soon enough

no i meant when you play the save file, you and your parent are invisible for some reason

Seems like I got hit with an autoevo run failure in multicellular just now, what sort of feedback am I supposed to give here?

i hope this mass mass-budding bug gets fixed, its so disturbing to see

Did you test the invisible mass budding thing again?

Also is it your favourite repro mode?

First: what was the error you got shown, if any?

I got no error shown, just that the autoevo failed to run and a link to the text report, though it didn’t seem to work

Also it seems like on larger cell counts it can be hard to get the mate for sexual repro to spawn in

nah, since sexual gives a MP discount, i will be using that (it is always super annoying to run out of MP when you have some ideas left)

I mean the same could still very well happen with sexual repro, speaking of finding a mate for it can be a bit of a pain at larger sizes of an organism

i always use 20 cells for my completed multi organism

Aswell, so that any more cells don’t cause even more problems

Hmmm, for the problem we were having before, a rather clear exception error was shown, so this sounds like something different. If you replay from a save just before, does it happen again?

I believe that save got removed by now.

this is actually another reason why i use sexual, because i always thought that the generations were short, like i got born, then after like 3-5 minutes im back in the editor, so having to do something before going to the editor is like an extra adventure

It’s even faster if you’re using 2x mode
