Entertainments

Wow, it’s been 2 years since i logged in. Hello Thrive community again!

So, into the main topic, I can clearly see people discussing about culture and it’s ability and spread, but not really ‘about’ alien population’s entertainment. I’d like to make a thesis here.

Currently, the only sensory organelle is chemoreceptor(i believe), and the one and only function of this specific organelle is to locate resources or dedicated specie. Too bad the game doesn’t have an organ functions as eye or ear yet. This means that the society formed by our creatures will be blind, not only blind but also deaf for now. Which pretty much infers that those sapient creatures won’t be using almost anything related to vision and hearing, which we are so familiar with: Drawing, picture, music/song, movie, animation and so on. Okay, then how will they entertain themselves only with the ability of smelling and feeling?

The premise is of them having an ability of learning(reward and punishment system, at least), so they have urge to feel happy/good. Sadly, when i tried searching for a thesis related to this topic, i couldn’t find any(the closest one to the topic was about music’s effect over domesticated animals), which means our creativity have to take in place. Our creatures can feel, so they can write and record information in a form of braille. Scent dissolves too easily either underwater or land, so that’s not ideal. What I just said opened a whole new world to our blind, deaf creatures, and yes, i mean literature. So library can exist in this such society, which means entertainment.

Talking about the feeling, we cannot miss sports. Ah, sports. I won’t classify the following as ‘Sport’, but various land animals fight to achieve specific goals. Take Dung beetles as an example. Dung beetles are well-known for their fight over dung clump, usually during mating season. And humans do that too, obviously: are you going to ignore about all the love stories? Fighting over things is a natural instinct throughout almost every single life form, at least with a brain, and as you know, winning over something itself gives off dopamine. This will be applied similar to our creature with reward-punishment logic in their brain. They will do this EVEN BEFORE they even gain sapience. And after they gain sapience? Wrestling, boxing, you name it. They would have physical sports. Also let me elaborate on board games. With their ability to feel, they can also play rather simple board games as chess, go, or something similar to those two invented by them. This will instantly add another range of entertainments to our society.

About smelling… well the best i can think of is gardening. Let me know what you think.

So, can we apply entertainments to the game? I sure do think so. Sensory organelles will be added in future i believe, so the variety of entertainments which the specie you created will be enjoying will be determined by diversity of sensory organelles of it. The game logic will be functioning like this: If they have hearing and touch but not vision, they will be able to construct music stand and braille library, but not theater. There’s a Media dedicated section planned in Nation Editor(thank you thrive wiki), and it says it will give info about the content of media. Well that’s…. concerning. My creativity’s limit is here i think. Please share opinions about entertainments in the comments. Thanks for reading this all.

Welcome back to the forum @Thriveloverin_kr !

Could we potentially add Smell-O-Vision for smelling as well, maybe more advanced if smelling is better on a creature

I think smell and touch only civs would be rather rare since other lifeforms would gain great advantages if they evolve hearing or especially vision. And I really doubt we’ll be seeing more strategy stage development before these other senses get added.
By the way pretty sure you joined this year and not 2 years ago but nevertheless welcome back @Thriveloverin_kr !

Looked it up. Smell-O-Vision really might work. Thinking about it, i think it can be applied to gallery as well. Instead of painting, there are perfume samples all around the building you can smell.

If they have electroreception and/or magnetoreception, maybe they like making and receiving “electric” or “magnetic” pulses into a weird equivalent of music?

If you could view those in the thriveopedia what would these say exactly? “This smells like oranges”?

This makes me wonder how different fruits and vegetables on alien worlds would smell like. Would they even smell like fruits and vegetables on Earth?

The chances are not. We will probably have to answer the smell of things question one day though.

Well, yes I believe so. For smell gallery at least. I also thought about smell museum. While smell gallery is more like the Earth’s perfume shop, smell museum is more like photo museum. It saves specific coordinate’s scent compared to smell gallery saving artificially extracted scents mixed.

Would there be similar things for other senses?

Not saying aliens will have same form of entertainment, but we humans have them, i think, for all 5 senses. Vision has, well, gallery and theater. Hearing has opera house/music stand, taste has restaurant, we got perfume stores for our nose’s pleasure, and for touching we have sandboxes in playground.

Although other senses(even taste with full course meal which can be seen as ‘arts’ on a sequence) have gallery formed way of entertainment, I am not really sure the game will have a gallery-form entertainment for creatures with only touch. But we at least have something similar like 3D paintings(maybe sculptures).

I think these are mostly for nutrition and not to be seen as arts.

Just a hunch but I don’t think people are going to three michelin star restaurants for upwards of 300 dollars just for the nutrition.

I mean yes there is some art involved in restaurants’ dishes too but there’s also the nutrition part in there. Perhaps it’s a balance of both

I think different forms of literature (oral or written) will be available in any case, they can use a developed sense to tell stories, as well as tactile writing to record it.

For species with such a sense as electroreception would electric circuits and stuff become a form of entertainment? Or would tbelgium prefer something acting more organic?

I wonder if a blind species would even develop Augmented and Artificial Reality for entertainment?

Probably via some sound stuff. If they feel with their skin the sounds though, it could take much more advanced tech than what we have now to achieve “VR” for them.
