assasin plants. kudzu, but one that attacks only some buildings. if it also growed underground with roots, you could plant these, drop the seeds from a plane, to find underground secret facilities. if you could communicate with the plant. because you’re advanced in biology.

That was discovered in the real world, so I don’t think it counts as “scifi”.
I realize now that we are talking about different things. When I say scifi in relation to Thrive, I mean FTL and Ascension. Fusion and other stuff that should be perfectly doable according to our current knowledge of physics is outside the scifi category in Thrive.
Also in hindsight I realize that this is very unclear and not the meaning the word scifi has outside of Thrive.
Up to here, what you listed wouldn’t count as scifi. Only FTL would be the point where the player gets to decide if they want to go that way or just be happy in early space stage and never complete the game.

Perhaps there still could be an option to have all scifi techs BUT The Ascension Gate locked?
Why would you specifically not want to be able to complete the game? I fail to see why someone would specifically want FTL (so scifi tech) but no end of the game (the final stage, ascension). I can see why someone would want to keep the end game “pure” by excluding FTL and other scifi tech that isn’t doable with our current physics knowledge (or maybe ever), but if someone approves of FTL I don’t see why they wouldn’t also be fine with ascension.

Oh sorry I worded that wrong, I was meant to say “lock all scifi techs BUT The Ascension Gate”.
That wouldn’t really work with the planned end game scenario of needing massive resource amounts that only a space empire can gather to build and power an ascension gate. So it would require a completely reworked end of the game and ascension gate mechanics just for that one specific scenario. Thus I don’t see how that would be worth it to put into official plans as I imagine just a couple of people really wanting that option, and it would take hours and hours to make and each time the ascension gate was rebalanced or tweaked that extra supported case would double the amount of needed testing.

Oh I see, I thought powering it would still be doable with non-scifi technologies.
I mean if my plan mostly goes through then it would be like it needs at least the power of 5 suns, so good luck gathering that many stars / their energy in one place without FTL…

You mean you’d have to move the stars to one place?

You can, in fact, move stars. 5 stars is pretty modest imo, you could pull that off within half a million years, or maybe a lot less. Could you pull off staying as one civ without spliting or going to war with yourself without FTL? Nah.
Oracles have showmanship. Show me a computer that can pretend a god is talking through them.
This is a real thing.
This is scientifically proven possible.
The first robot was hydraulic, and its sole purpose was if you put an empty cup in its hand, it would fill it with what the Greeks considered the perfect balance of wine and water. It was built to look like a Maid. Basically a clever statue.
This was probably a very decorative catapult. The ancients liked making things look like other thinks. A large man that can throw boulders is scarier than a regular catapult, so a catapult that “looks” like a man will strike more fear into your enemies.
I’m not familiar with this one, but it sounds plausible.

The hard part isn’t mechanical imo, it’s computational. Robots without computers aren’t really a thing.
Technically, no. If you’re annoying.
Lasers are a single wavelength, the sun an extremely diverse mix of wavelengths. Death ray, sure, possible, laser? Nahh.

I wonder how would “control one specimen” option work like in space stage, there’s lots of stuff to consider…
If Wikipedia can’t agree with itself about what is or isn’t a robot, then debating it is like debating the correct way to pronounce potato. There are multiple definitions and no real right answer.

Okay I see. I guess that antique robot would be closer to a generic “machine”… right?

wikipedia isn’t the best source out there. I’d say a human operated or fully predictable robot isn’t a robot. A robot doesn’t have to be human smart, but for example here’s one definition:
A robot is an autonomous machine capable of sensing its environment, carrying out computations to make decisions, and performing actions in the real world.
There are in fact loads of other definitions, but this one requires sensing the environment and making decisions. it also asks for computing but like, is an xor not computing? You can glue a few physical logic gates together and get some half decent functionality for a fixed purpose robot. I’d say computerless robots aren’t impossible, they’re just ta really bad idea.
I don’t know if wikipedia is the end all be all of definitions, but you are right, robot is a contentious term with no true answer. I just feel like the original intent was as autonomous humans. it was morphed to include autonomous anythings because anthropocentrism is dumb, and then people kept trying to make robots, but since artificial intelligence is hard, they just started calling their robot bodies with no robot minds robots. I’d say we have decent terms for things like drones and manufacturing robots. Drones, or anything else human controlled, is a drone. Fixed function manufacturing robots could be called dumb robots, or automata, or something else, but only the modern ones that can be configured for a variety of tasks count as robots imo. Of course robot has no true defintion, you can disagree, I just don’t see the point.
Yeahh… not nearly as cool
