Hypothetically, a game can automatically minimize itself so it has to run in the background. It can also automatically buy upgrades in itself so that you don’t have to open it up.

Wouldn’t the later be a 0-player game?

Those were both attributes for the same hypothetical game I was talking about. So the hypothetical game would be 0 player.

So 0-player is an another category an idle game could take on?

Yes, certainly. After all, it’s not like letting something auto generate requires a human!

Do autoclickers change anything here?

Autoclickers allow you to walk away from the game and still make progress, the whole point of idle games.

Wouldn’t that also be achieved with point-collectors in-game? Like something the actual game provides.

Yes, but autoclickers maximise an extra point collector that isn’t automatic: clicking the thing itself with your cursor.

Have you used autoclickers not-from-within-the-game before?

No, not really… Idle games are the only instances I have used them.

I meant if you used them on these games, but that answers this question too.

I think a game counts as an idle game as long as you can make progress while “idle” so not making any active inputs or having to look at the game to react to events (or very rarely having to look at the game). So I wouldn’t discount entries from the idle genre just because there’s no like passive progress while the game program is closed.

Thinking about it, the plant/sessile side of Thrive could be considered idle in a way. Obviously not making Thrive an idle game but still.

Sometimes I forget about one of my profiles for a month and it suddenly has Jeff Bezos’ lifetime earnings.

You mean you have multiple runs of that game running?

You can have multiple profiles, which all deposit into the same chest. A profile can deposit one thing into a chest, and your other profile can take it. Stealing from yourself is truly one of the best selling points of this game.
