Which version were they in again?

It was in 0.6.3.0 and below…

Cells can get pretty big in real life though. The video @Rocketsgobrrrr linked has 6 different macroscopic single celled organisms.

I see. That’s quite some time ago already. I guess improving the auto-evo does take away stuff at times… But that’s the price we should we willing to pay for a realistic spore “successor”.

I think the mucus one might have been 0.6.7, but I might be miss remembering that.

I wonder if there will be support added for large, amoeba-like cells one day…

Maybe. An important step might be to re-add the mutation rate slider going all the way to 5.

It could also require adding things like pseudopods to microbe stage, which is rather certainly a feature for times after 1.0.0. Long after.

Macroscopic cells are 99% NOT getting into the game due to such a feature being highly niche.

Agreed, but it is an argument for huge cells that can engulf the (microscopic) player being plausible.

Would they player be able to become such a cell too in order to get to sapience or would it always be a dead-end path?

I think being that large would make moving to multicellular problematic. But you could always just evolve to be smaller again.

I guess so… afterall, removing is a lot cheaper than adding in-game.

I think it’s worth adding a multi-niche debuff to the game due to the fact that species that occupy several niches at once will collect less energy than specialized species. Example: a bacterium that engages in both chemolithotrophy and chemosynthesis will be much less efficient than two separate species, one of which is chemolithotrophic and the other is chemotrophic. This should encourage the specialization of auto-evo species.

On the other side, if the species are too specialized it will become a lot harder to fill in a missing niche/miche…
