This guy is WILDLY out of touch with normal people. Three separate protocols in a stack is a perfectly decent idea, but you need to be able to download a single app to do all three easily, and you NEED to be able to give yourself a cutesy profile, you may not think its necessary, but you need to be able to say “no need to pay for nitro, cutesy profiles for all!” to your normie friend.

steam can and has kicked games off to cater to big corps. it also sets the industry standard cut so it can force small competitors who need more funds to be a bad deal and prevent anyone else from scaling back to attract users by locking in as many people as possible.

They don’t have federation or self-hosting (without losing your sanity) so all switching to it does is just restart the waiting sequence until they get mad with power (and enough users) and start the enbelgiumtification process all over again.

in contrast stoat is open source… so much more resistant. self-hosting / federation is ABSOLUTELY needed to prevent enbelgiumification outright, but open source slows it a lot, when they start removing all self-hosting or charging for featurss forks will get popular, unfortunately that will also drain userbase and make it not worth it…

Well this doesn’t always happen. RocketChat is open source but the “free” version is nerfed hard. And there’s still no more competing forks. It’s actually very hard for a fork to have enough resources to compete with the main offering when they have a monetization strategy or investment money. And RocketChat has been a thing for many years.
