You’ve heard of gaming rigs. What if I told you that you could make a computer people ACROSS THE WORLD could play on? Yep, that’s a server!
Why did I introduce you to the concept of servers? Don’t question it, you will enjoy the slop. Here’s my build:https://pcpartpicker.com/list/hfJnqH

I’d likely either go with a cheap old xeon server board or entire workstation (i.e. this) and buy a third 1 tb hdd to put into a raid array (whichever mode lets you use any two drives to restore the others idk how raid works im just a)

I am not sure so many people here are planning to construct a server besides you, much less having already done that, though maybe Hhyyrylainen has already done that before.

I’m presently using one of those rpi5 knockoff boards for a server (samabashare for my external hard drive, jellyfin for the media on there, and modern java in case i feel like minecraft) and i’ve been thinking of upgrading, ARM really lacks the power for a lot these days. It’s really fun to mess around with, i did some debain repository hacking around to get hardware accelerated opengl, transcoding, and box86/64. no vulkan bc rockchip hates fun, but I still got a few pc games to launch. Doom refused and thrive had a fixable issue i didn’t bother fixing.
idk i was rly tired when i wrote that mightve been an “im just a girl” joke or a regular “i’m just alright at server stuff”
mostly these day the difference is gonna be in software. a lot of pc comes with lots of ram slots, even just for gaming or whatever! Personally, i’d still prefer an old xeon over a comparable i7 or whatever, the actual specialized features I care about are pcie lanes (i have little use or money for multi-gpu setups, but multi-nvme setups and a high-speed NIC would be rly cool) and ecc (for paying more on RAM).
