M1: The signalling beacon system and the digestive system become more malleable, adapting to the Purple Protists and their Sulfur Bacteria symbionts. They use a system similar to that of the immune system, which copies the signaling agents from recently digested beings and copies them; this also allows for the development of β€˜gut bacteria’ within some of the digestive tissues (with M2), increasing digestive efficiency and efficacy.

M2: Broaden symbiotic relationships; give access to the warning system to Vendoconularia triradiata in exchange for additional territory and food. Do the same with Flabellophyton Mystificus. Notably, start a symbiotic relationship with the Polyhedromorphs, using the signalling and such to start a farm-like environment in some colonies, in exchange for better breeding conditions and protection from some of the other creatures. Start relations with the fire-bending fungus in the shallow pool systems inhabited by Vendoconularia triradiata.

Keep the name Belgium. It’s funny.

Wouldn’t size increase kill them, or does the superpower prevent that?

The superpower would prevent that, and it is only for a short time before going back to normal size.

I wonder what could the bacteria do with this then, maybe it’d increase their area of absorbing various nutrients?

Round 5

Location: Belgium

New Time Period: Atla ~ 550 Million years ago

13 million years later, this timeline’s version of the Shuram Excursion has ended. The paleocontinents of Siberia, Baltica, and Laurentia have fully separated due to the extinguishing Pannotian Geodynamic Magmacell, leaving the remaining landmass now called Supercontinent Gondwanaland. The Pan-African Super Ocean is no more. The early Iaeptus Ocean between Laurentia and Gondwanaland, the Γ†gir Sea between Siberia, Baltica, and Gondwanaland, and the remaining Paleo-Pacific Ocean have formed in its place. Increasing amount of ice at the poles from increasing Oxgyen in the atmosphere has caused the equivalent of the Baykonurian Glaciation to occur earlier in this timeline, making sea levels to further drop further to your timeline’s present day sea levels.

Both land and the seas continue to be shaped by super powered organisms. Even the air above the seas has offshoots of seafloaters. Offshoots of Firebending fungus on land have completed their symbiotic relationship with Strengthening/Weakening (Other Organisms) ancient Desmid-like Plant cells, starting to become this timeline’s early Prototaxites. Bacteria with the power of Giganitification near land have started to form enormous Stromatolites, displacing the non-superpowered ones, becoming among the largest structures created by nonsentient lifeforms. Underwater on the bottom of continental shelfs, offshoots colonies of Healing Factor powered Purple Protists have evolved cell membranes comprised of both Cellulose and Chitin, becoming Neohyphochytrids, and some Neohypochitrids have formed underwater colonies that look like waffles near the ancient Belgium coast. Primordial land plant ancestors near the littoral (intertidal) zone have evolved cyptospores with sporopollenin to prevent spore desiccation, and started a symbiotic relationship with the Mycelium of firebending-fungus derived Prototaxites, giving sugars in exchange for soil nutrients like phosphate and ammonia.

The first pulse of this world’s equivalent of the Koltin Crisis, also known as the End-Atlan Extinction, has begun (-80% population). Superpowered bacteria have had immediate impact on fluorescent benthic organisms, as their ability of momentary Gigantification has caused the microbial mats to literally undulate like they are moving and often fragment. It also makes them very difficult to eat. This has caused complete disruption of most life, which are dependent on microbial mats or rest upon them. The Ikara Assemblage signals a major turning point in the story of life on this alternative Earth.

The Ikara Assemblage has many surprising organisms. Descendants of offshoots of Charales taken to the ocean floor have gained pressure resistance, and have become parasitic by puncturing the native organisms and subsequently sucking out host nutrients. This is compounded by the parasitic plant’s superpower to Strengthen other organisms being used other plant cells, and the Weaken other organisms aspect on contact of host organisms. Some offshoots of Purple Protist Polyhedromorphs have started to stack upon each other for better protection, and have small secreted particles of silica spircules acting as primitive skeleton for greater stacking and strength. These strange formations seem to be this timeline’s equivalent of sponges, which are now long gone extinct. Other Polyhedromorphs have begun to swim using hydrogen gas filled pocket and become predatory by secreting digestive secretions. As resources and populations dwindle, movement and the ability of predation, or to withstand it, are now vital aspects of any surviving life.

Will superpowered Archaea herald the second phase of the End-Atlan Extinction, and begin a new period in life?

Lantianelle laevis

Lantianelle laevis evolved the signaling beacon system and digestive system to be adaptable to deal with the Purple Protists and their Sulfur Bacteria symbionts. While similar to the immune system in terms of coping signaling agents from digested matter, the organism is having trouble doing so due to Bacteria’s ability to gigantify, which ends up tearing up the digestive system and killing members of the species. Even worse, the disruption of the microbial mats has caused many of this controlling power species to be tipped over, becoming prey to the parasitic plants, predatory offshoots of Sprigginia floundersi, and predatory polyhedromorphic purple algae. Also, the lack of proper Mycelium has affected the organism’s ability of spores to navigate. Despite heading toward extinction, all is not lost. Symbiotic relationships have been expanded to Vendoconularia triradiata and Flabellophyton Mystificus by giving them access to the warning system run by Xinuiningella rara’s Mycelium network, in exchange for more territory and food. Attempts to establish symbiotic relationships with firebending fungi near the surface have been more difficult. Arborea elegans is trying its best to deflect the predators as a part of the network, but is overwhelmed. And the Polyhedral Purple algae β€œfarms” have helped slightly, despite taking a hit themselves from the microbial mats moving. Maybe more symbiotic relationships will be created in the future?

Xinuiningella rara

Xinuiningella rara evolved a primitive pocket with most of the absorption and defensive features that act like a primitive gut to deal with the invasive Polyhedromorphs. At the same time, the firebending fungus improved itself and the Mycelium network by evolving the ability to conduct electrical impulses like animal neurons and have some form of biological electrical insulation. Using bioluminescent GFP and Aequorin given by Arborea elegans has also increased the potential signaling of the Mycelium Network, which was expanded by Lantianelle laevis to Vendoconularia triradiata and Flabellophyton Mystificus, leading to less disruption from sonics. Normally, these improvements would have been a boon for such early organisms, but Bacteria in Microbial Mats growing and shrinking have caused disarray of microbial mats. This has caused disruption and failures along the mycelium network, affecting all members of various symbiotic relationships with the Mycelium network. Even with the ability to crawl away, many of this species end up turned on their side, unable to get proper nutrients. At least Xinuiningella rara does not deal with symbiotic Bacteria yet, as it automatically kills Polyhedramorphs using it firebending powers. Parasitic underwater plants tend to stay away from this species because of its firepowers, until the fungi are dying. Predatory offshoots of Spriggina floundersi tend to prey more on this organism often due to their armor giving them a little of extra health to get an extra bite on the organism, as they are desperate like many organisms nearing extinction. Will the Mycelium network survive the next phase of extinction?

Spriggina floundersi

The invisible organism has developed neuronal cells in a primitive neural system for better coordination of movement. Pigment cells have also become a photosensitive cup for better vision. This has allowed the organism to better react to bioluminescent and other light signals fromArborea elegans as a part of the mixed colonies and Mycelium network. However, the original Spriggina floundersi species is still a microbial mat grazer, to its own detriment. The Mycelium network of Xinuiningella rara now has better electrical communication, and expanded the signaling network by Lantianelle laevis to Vendoconularia triradiata and Flabellophyton Mystificus, giving more opportunity for these organisms to interact with each other. Despite these Mycelium Network improvements, the Gigantification super power of Bacteria has caused undulation and distintegration of microbial mats, disrupting this grazer species only source of food. Should some species even be able to ingest the growing and shrinking mats, it ultimately ends up killing them due to sudden expansion and damage anywhere across this armored organism’s primitive GI tract. Worse, offshoots of this species have become predatory, eating other organisms, including their own species for survival. This is not including other predators, like new predator floating Polyhedromorphs, or parasitic plants that have start to run rampant. This, like other Ikara Assemblage species, is in high danger of extinction. Perhaps it is time to diversify the diet?

Flabellophyton Mystificus

Flabellophyton Mystificus has become completely pelagic, as it no longer has attachment to the sea floor. Like Spriggina floundersi, the organism has evolved a primitive neural system. It seem neural advancement might be more common among other organisms soon. The new pelagic nature of the attraction powered organism helped it a little bit against the complete disruption of microbial mats due to Gigantification power of Bacteria. However, many young of this organism have fallen due to the collapse of the environment around microbial mats. Predatory Polyhedromorphs and predatory offshoots of Spriggina floundersi seem to target colonies of this organism more, especially parasitic multicellular plants, perhaps because of Flabellophyton Mystificus attraction power,.This is additional good news. Arborea elegans is trying to limit the spread of invasive Purple protsits by using its power. Lantianelle laevis expanded the Signaling network of Mycelium from Xinuiningella rara to Vendoconularia triradiata and Flabellophyton Mystificus, helping them to get by this ordeal. Unfortunately, Vendoconularia triradiata and Flabellophyton Mystificus still tend to avoid each other, with some interactions on attempted predation of each other from lack of population and nearing extinction. Maybe this relationship between benthic swimmers will improve?

Vendoconularia triradiata

The planktonic Vendoconularia triradiata has evolved calcium phosphate nanotube structure in its shell to deal with buoyancy pressure, gives insulation, and acts as a shock absorber. It also increased the rate of DNA damage repair to deal with UV damage. This has all made the first macroscopic organism to be in the air and deal with the disruption of microbial mats better than most benthic organisms. But it still took a large hit in population due to its earlier lifestages being affected, nearing extinction. Like most sessile organisms, the previous non-floater lifestage of the sonic scream power organism was knocked over, leaving it vulnerable to predatory Polyhedromorphs, multicellular parasitic plants, and other predator offshoots of organisms like Spriggina floundersi. Fortunately, Lantianelle laevis expanded the symbiotic relationship of the now electrical warning system created by the Mycelium of Xinuiningella rara with Flabellophyton Mystificus and the sound organism in exchange for more territory and food. Despite this, Vendoconularia triradiata still tends to avoid Flabellophyton Mystificus, but it is getting better. Also, there is now a less antagonist relationship with Xinuiningella rara, probably due to the sonic insulation evolved for the later lifestage. Interestingly, there are now more interactions with the light-manipulating Arborea elegans, which could be useful in the future.

Arborea elegans

Arborea elegens still survives by a symbiotic relationship with the Mycellium network of Xinuiningella rara. The light-manipulating organism now has evolved GFP and Aequorin fluorescent proteins using FRET, and giving them to Firebending fungus for improved communication. Also, spores now emit capture light to glow to attract potential organisms, giving this organism a much needed boost in reproduction. But all is not Quite in the Western Front, as microbial mats have begun to move and fragment from Bacteria having Gigantification power. Almost all benthic organisms become seriously hit, and Arborea elegens is no exception. While its light powers are able to keep parasitic multicellular plants away from it, the rest of the mixed species colony predators surviving the first phase of extinction are too much to handle for this light-manipulating species alone. It has tried to signal to microbial mat eating Spriggina floundersi via bioluminescence, but that species is in severe decline from having its main food supply of microbial mats completely disrupted. Many times, swarms of predatory Polyhedromorphs are around causing issues. Sometimes, Vendoconularia triradiata comes to the rescue, warding off the predatory offshoots of Spriggina floundersi that are also attracted by the bioluminescence. Lantianelle laevis expanded the now electrical warning system comprised of Xinuiningella rara’s Mycelium to Vendoconularia triradiata and Flabellophyton Mystificus in exchange for more territory. Maybe more interactions will develop with Flabellophyton Mystificus.
