No The they wouldn’t have ownership of RG. They would likely put RG in the list of studios they funded on their website, but they wouldn’t formally own it to my knowledge.
That’s good, as we’d like RG to stay nonowned.
I’m pretty sure Maxis had the same funding issue as Revolutionary Games where they looked for investors and EA found them and by extension got ownership of the company.
We wouldn’t want a second Spore situation.
So we should stay away from the expo scene then, right?
No, expos are useful for getting investors and an audience. You just have to make sure the deal you have with the investing companies doesn’t include your game/studio being owned by them.
Well then we need to be certain of every detail in such deals.
Anyways, I read up on the event and apparently there won’t just be investors and audience but also (quoted from the website) “ gives each developer five minutes (including Q&A) with each panel of experts, meaning all entrants will get feedback in real-time and post-event via email too.”
So there’ll be experienced devs talking + feedback on the game
You mean devs of other projects?
Yes I believe there will be.
Huh. Wonder if any worked on evo games then…
Why don’t we just do what other games do like the bibites andlet patreon subscribers be a few updates ahead?
They do, sort of. 2nd and 3rd tier Patron subscribers get weekly updates. Everyone else gets an update every other month. Mind you, when the every other month update comes out, for one week, patrons have the same version as everyone else. But most of the time, they are ahead.
They also get extra progress reports and stuff iirc
This is true. And also this:
So we do already have a Patreon and offer various rewards.
Supporting us on Patreon helps a lot in funding the game and we appreciate it a ton.
I’ll slightly add that the Devbuild and higher tier patrons get access to our full devbuild system. Which means that they can play any successful build of the game. So while after a release there won’t be a new promoted BOTD for a week, any especially curious patron can grab any random change as they happen on our GitHub and once the build completes play it through the Thrive Launcher within 10 minutes of the work happening. Us developers actually use the same system to playtest new changes to the game (whenever we have someone active playtesting, we are looking for a new tester as our previous testers have become inactive). So the patrons have access to very early versions of the game if they want to.
(There’s currently a server issue causing builds to fail, but builds from yesterday can be played right now)
By the way, have there been any people who have bought “multiple” patreon memberships?
Although I am aware of patreon, I notice that I’ve never gotten a popup or anything asking me to donate to the patreon. I think a little popup saying donate pls when I start up the thrive launcher would make one or 2 people donate
That would probably be the case, however it would equally annoy quite many people. So I see that more of a last resort type of thing. I think a softer alternative would be for the free thrive version to have an ad for the Steam version of Thrive on the left side on the main menu asking people to support future development by buying the game on Steam.
add a checkbox saying remind me in 30 days. I don’t think anyone would be too annoyed by clicking a button every 30 days
This approach could also work if a thrive patreon ad was too used for this idea instead, though if at all, it would probably need to be alongside the steam version ad and not alone.
If this is done, there should be an option somewhere to hide the ad without closing it. This way, someone who wants to donate can see the ad, and if someone does not like seeing the ad, it is hidden, but still there if that person decides to change his/her mind.
