given how I just effectively got what to my immune system seems like a massive bodywide infection of an entirely unknown pathogen, I think it’s gonna freak out, so I’d like to take immunosuppresants now

Immortality has to be removed through special means, and sometimes if someone is too immortal those means wont work.
Something like falling into a lava pit would not remove a layer of immortality, as normal immortality would prevent me from dying to a lava pit in the first place and still prevent my death no matter what comes my way for the duration.

I think the way it works is that there are different ways to obtain immortality, and these layers of immortality need to be removed separately because they have different methods of removal.

Take Sun WuKong for instance. After devouring peaches from the Jade Emperors garden and drinking some booze some other god made that also happened to tack another level of immortality on, they tried to remove his immortality by putting him in an urn for something like 50 days that will force the immortal elixir out of him, killing him in the process, but because he had achieved a difference kind of immortality before that prevented this method from working, he came out unscathed and with all 5 layers of his immortality he had at the time intact and letting him get out Scott free.
