THE NEW Miscellaneous Talk That Doesn't Deserve A New Thread Thread Thread (Part 2)

i mean if you want to you could do the work of finding which words are more popular

Looking at you, OpenAI.

Hmm, the Linux kernel might not use Rust anymore.

  1. Not cool, France. Not cool.
  2. Haha, laughing at you Microsoft.
  3. Iā€™m kind of skeptical that Apple will achieve fame on gaming even with a compatibility tool.

  1. Even if he managed to capture good evidence of the aliens, the US secret agencies would have quickly raided the manā€™s house and confiscated every computer.
  2. The ship couldā€™ve been made by the US military and the man and his family either couldā€™ve wanted to attract attention or been just on drugs because I have not seen any concrete piece of evidence that shows the creatures.
  3. Itā€™s also possible that weā€™re the first species in the galaxy (or the first in the Orion arm) to have reached the Civilized Age and the beginning of space exploration and that supposed aliens could also just be creatures that humans have secretly modified to scientific research. Why? I donā€™t know and weā€™ll probably never know because thereā€™s not a single governmental body that will reveal anything about UFOs and X-rays (codename for aliens in XCOM).

I donā€™t think this is really going to affect rust adoption in the kernal with how niche it is (though rust is somehow the most dramatic language) also I think the drama is like pretty old already and settled iirc

Sort of unrelated but I been learning rust recently and it been kind of fun, I can see why people like to use it

extremely unfun fact that everyone should know to prevent more death from it: there is a company called estrolabs* that sells what they call an ā€œestrogen alternative HRT drugā€ that actually makes your gobelgium produce more of the hormones they naturally produce in the short term and if taken as directed you will die from serotonin syndrome, they advertise their ā€œestrogen alternative HRT drugā€(read: actual poison targeted towards specific groups, AKA: an attempt at genocide) as being a blend of several herbs and spices that promote estrogen production.

if not for my brain being so full of questions i canā€™t not question something i would likely have fallen victim to this since i was too tired to realize that amazon doesnā€™t prevent distribution of poison through its warehouses, luckily though my brain is practically made of questions so one lead to another and i found that the reviews were far lower than the confirmed purchases and the reviews that were there reported looking more masculine after taking it and they stopped because of that after less than a week and then i decided ā€œbelgium it, letā€™s search it up.ā€ and found this, after that i decided to check reddit and found the reason for the drastic difference between reviews and people who bought it: it gives you serotonin syndrome if taken as directed.

On one hand, there are people who bully people with pronouns, which is evil, and on the other hand, there are people who will ruin your life if you just want to have a little fun, which is unforgivable.

Itā€™s pretty funny that the pronouns option is translated into Finnish. So any Finnish person if they follow the example text will just put in ā€œhƤnā€. Iā€™m kind of tempted to do that just for fun. Very cool feature.

What does hƤn mean? Is it a neutral pronoun? What would be the equivalent in English?

It translates to he/she. So yes, it is the neutral pronoun. If you take some English text and translate it back to English you lose the gender of pronouns. For example youā€™d need to translate things back either as ā€œthey went to the storeā€ or ā€œhe/she went to the storeā€ if you donā€™t have any context clues to figure out the gender of the talked about person.

Additionally in spoken Finnish ā€œseā€ is used to refer to people meaning that in spoken Finnish thereā€™s just one word for he/she/it.

i just put they/them or yours are was/were in that box

Gollum would put us/we.

@hhyyrylainen, what would be the advantage of a rolling release distro if itā€™s for a server? In what context would I use such a distro instead of using a stable release distro?

Because I canā€™t consciously stop consciously breathing

just stop breathing until your unconcious breathing resumes when that happens

What do you mean you cant? I can do it just fine.

Something has to distract me, focusing on breathing doesnā€™t help automate it

Iā€™ve been having an amazing ck3 playthrough as Switzerland.
My current ruler, Prince Friedrich ā€˜the Man of Glassā€™ is 59 your old diligent, humble, greedy, confider, poet, lunatic, genius, pilgrim, murderer, contrite, athletic, herbalist scholar who has expanded Switzerland out by a few duchies and has taken up a hobby of assassinating Holy Roman Emperors (who are invariably his liege).
Heā€™s killed five so far, he started because they were swabian, and thus made him no longer the cultural head, but now heā€™s just doing it for fun.
For about 17 years he has had an absolute genius of a man (51 learning), who was literally a miracle worker, as his court jester, starting when he was about 80.
When his daughter died he seriously considered having her stuffed and bringing her corpse around everywhere with him.
And when he finally inadvertently inherited the Imperial crown he gave it to someone else because he didnā€™t want it, and then a few days later decided that he wanted it and nearly started a war for it before it was given to him out of fear.

What do you guys think about the current reddit blackout that happening because of the api drama?

It wonā€™t do anything. If it was at least a couple months, itā€™d be way more effective.

that redditā€™s stupidity will be its downfall based just on the sheer number of subreddits that rely on 3rd party bots and apps to moderate themselves and the amount of people that need 3rd party apps to even just use reddit.
but yeah Nie is correct about that, itā€™d need to be at least until they decided that 3rd party apps were going to be permanently supported due to loss of revenue

You get newer packages, which as I said is both a benefit and a drawback. Usually people prefer to use more stable versions on servers and manually install new versions of things they really care about. Or nowadays it is pretty common to run services with docker so that means the host OS having old versions of PHP or dotnet runtime donā€™t matter at all.

One more platform showing how little they care about their built up userbase and trying to see how fast they can run the site into the ground.

YIL that Unreal Engine and Unity can now be used on Linux.

Speaking of game engines, I want to ask you a question about HL2ā€™s folder structure, @hhyyrylainen. This is because I want to make Source mods on Linux in the future and I donā€™t know how it will be different from Windows. On Windows, the directory Steam/steamapps/Half Life 2/hl2 looks like this :

What does it look like on Linux? Does the bin folder also have .dll files on Linux? To make a game both on Windows and Linux, do I have to make two different source codes or do I have to adjust the same source code to work well on both platforms?
