THE NEW Miscellaneous Talk That Doesn't Deserve A New Thread Thread Thread (Part 2)

Very different. Half life 2 is running natively on Linux so obviously it has Linux native executable and library formats.

Like this:

and the bin folder:

(and yes, I had to specifically install hl2 just to take the screenshots)

The only place .dll files exist on Linux if you are running non-native software using Wine or Proton. Or if you have an app written in C# and the .dll file actually contains CIL bytecode. Even then the runtime for that bytecode is a native Linux program, it just supports executing programs stored in a format thatā€™s also used on Windows.

This is literally the worst possible option. This is why games drop Linux versions and cite ā€œtoo difficult to maintainā€ as the reason. Itā€™s the most idiotic thing to ā€œportā€ a game to Linux by making a copy of it and then getting it working.

What you instead need to do is to start doing cross platform development. Which means that you separate all the parts that are platform specific or interact with the operating system into one place. Then you use preprocessor directives to control which platform specific code needs to compile. For example one bit is for Windows, another is for Mac and Linux. Then thereā€™s some other OS specific operation that needs an implementation separately for Windows, Linux and Mac.

Yes, you put in compiler instructions in the source code to activate specific parts of the code only when compiling for a specific target platform.

why not put ads in the community forums?

because ad anoy

they could be tiny and in the sidebars if there were any

Itā€™s very unlikely the ads would bring in any significant revenue. It would do much more to annoy the users than to bring in any monetary benefit.

What about mobile users? Phone screens are so narrow that for them ads would need to be interleaved with the content to be visible at all.

yeah it would either not work for mobile users or have just one pixel on screen for them

An ad being unreadable is probably worse than it not working. I canā€™t imagine the ad providers to be happy about being charged ad impressions for things that arenā€™t actually visible to the user who supposedly viewed the ad.

maybe just at the bottom of the page right below the suggested topics bar for mobile then

Itā€™s really amusing that the French government counts WhatsApp as an app for people with privacy concerns when itā€™s owned by Facebook! Also, I should really try out some other distros. Iā€™ve been using Ubuntu for ages, and often get fed up with it. I generally use the LTS releases, but they always have features that stop working after a while, and I can never find out how to fix them (not that I can be bothered to try very hard).

And regarding Unity: Iā€™m pretty sure I was using that on Linux about 3 years ago.

@willow Ashwagandha can be really useful, but not for anything related to HRT. Iā€™ve been taking it for months - itā€™s really helped with long-Covid brain fog. I was getting debilitating levels of brain fog, but it stopped almost entirely when I started taking that. Did you know that Infowars claims that the Patriot Front is an ā€˜obvious false flag by the Globalists, making the far right look badā€™? Thatā€™s despite them acting just the same as other far right groups, but i digress. But before taking anything, you should find out whatā€™s in it and what it does. And even if something is beneficial for you in a lot of ways, there could be reasons it would be bad for you - such as interacting with medication, or worsening other heath issues. Itā€™s always worth checking.

@hhyyrylainen I wonder how general pronoun options would translate into Japanese, where even your own name can be your preferred pronoun.

Unity and Unreal have had Linux versions of their editors for quite many years now, though they have extra bugs and issues. I actually submitted a PR to unreal engine to fix window resize flag not working correctly on Linux and they even merged it. Iā€™ve heard that the unity editor experience is much worse on Linux thanks to unreal accepting community-made Linux fixes.

The user could just put their name in the pronoun field? Though, I donā€™t much see the point. This is one of those features that donā€™t make sense when localizing to certain target languages. For Finnish such an option makes no sense whatsoever, and apparently for Japanese as well it doesnā€™t make sense except maybe as an additional nickname box.

I havenā€™t used Unity in ages, so I wasnā€™t aware of that until recently.

The update is already coming! RIP Black SteamUI. You will be missed.

Did you know that Iā€™m 9000+ years old?

The new UI also removes the ability to skin the UI so itā€™s the end for custom steam skins too

I always knew that.

for some reason my youngest sibling gets sick on their birthday every year and itā€™s contagious which means i pretty often get sick because of the cake traditions after it, i am currently sick because of that.

Then dont eat the cake?

the cake was worth it, iā€™m just annoyed that i got sick.

My favorite example of EAS analog horror. The first time I watched this one, it really got me. Even then, I still rewatch it.

It sure is beautiful, but it looks a little blurry. Man, I miss that old black UI. We can only hope that Valve will reimplement skins.

You can actually get back the old ui by doing some config shenanigan
