THE NEW Miscellaneous Talk That Doesn't Deserve A New Thread Thread Thread (Part 2)

Pretty much. And it seems to have led to a huge amount of fruitless research - possibly more than any other area of science. But there have been many scientific theories which have been met with laughter and then later been accepted. It seems like string theory went the opposite way.

It might be that the attraction of string theory as explaining extra dimensionality arose from confusing extra physical dimensions with extra conceptual dimensions. William Rowan Hamilton invented the quaternion system in 1843, showing that rotation in 3d space could only be fully described by adding an extra dimension to it. But this didnโ€™t mean that there must be another dimension in space. In the same way, using an extra dimension to (somewhat successfully) demonstrate a relation between gravity and electromagnetism doesnโ€™t mean that they must actually be sharing in a fifth dimension. This is just conjecture on my part, but there is a huge overlap in mainstream science literature between different concepts of dimensionality, which causes quite a lot of confusion.

Huh, so thatโ€™s the guy that made 3D games so hard to make. [/joke]

Supposedly, it makes 3d movement and rotation more efficient for computers to calculate, even if itโ€™s confusing for human use.

Well itโ€™s the only thing that makes it possible. If you donโ€™t use quaternions then you get gimbal lock situations. So unless you want to make a really amateur 3D game with a ton of extra bugs, you just need to learn enough quaternion and matrix math to know how to use them to manipulate objects in 3D space.

What is gimbal lock exactly? Iโ€™ve heard the term in game dev but only in reference to being bad and you should use quaternions.

In my childhood, I used to read oldish sci-fi books called dragonology, which sometimes explained the anatomy of dragons. Dragons would have a snake-like teeth but instead of ejecting venom, it would eject some sort of fuel. Meanwhile, on the bottom of the mouth would be two rocks, which would then be scr*aped against each other by the action of muscles, triggering sparks and setting the fuel aflame.

@hhyyrylainen, scr*aped should not be censored.

Fine. I just installed Discourse updates today so itโ€™ll be likely a while before the change will be deployed.

Also, I now pretty much know how quaternions work after having worked with them for like over 5 years.

At certain angles you cannot rotate an object further. For example at a specific angle you might lose left/right control of the player character. Thatโ€™s obviously not good. So instead of using Euler angles, you should always use quaternions which can be infinitely applied. So thereโ€™s no possible angle on top of which any kind of quaternion couldnโ€™t be applied.

Sorry, I meant to answer Oncpapa. I shouldnโ€™t have mentioned you. Sorry. There was one part of the video speaking of gimbal lock while showing a funny FIFA glitch and I thought to share it.

ALERT! Update!

Valve just changed the SteamVR icon. Does that meanโ€ฆ? Valve Deckard!?

what happend to my pfp

It been like that for awhile though?

For more than a month from what I recallโ€ฆ

Iโ€™ve been looking for a 3D printer Iโ€™d like to buy soon and Iโ€™m torn between the Prusa XL and the Snapmaker Artisan.

3D Printer Pros Cons
Snapmaker Artisan
Has CNC & Laser; Has larger space than Prusa XL (40 cm vs 36 cm)
Jack of All Trades, Master of None (every function is not as a good as a dedicated machine); Expensive unless you start with the 3D printing only model
Prusa XL
Probably better at 3D Printing than the Artisan; More โ€œOpen-sourceโ€; Has a โ€œpentaextruderโ€ module
Is not a 3-in-1 unless you build the CNC and laser modules/software yourself; Is smaller than the Artisan (36 cm vs 40 cm)

What do you guys think? I mean, the 3-in-1 option looks interesting, but at the same time I can DIY it on the Prusa. Iโ€™m not sure if thatโ€™ll be easy, though.

iโ€™d say go with the better one for 3d printing and work on your skills so you can DIY the prusa into a 3 in one since thatโ€™ll likely be better than the snapmaker

As someone who pre-ordered the PrusaXL, just get a prusa MK4 if you want a prusa 3d printer soon

Itโ€™s a Prusa XL without the toolchanger and a smaller bed

The PrusaXL is not going to be delivered anytime soon lmao

Actually, I can wait until December/January (I lied about getting one soon) and I would prefer having a larger 3D printer.

Hmmโ€ฆ My wishlist projects to upgrade itโ€ฆ

  • CNC
  • Laser cutting/engraving
  • 4th & 5th axis module for both CNC and laser
  • Making pull requests for Prusa Slicer to integrate those features

Iโ€™m too ambitiousโ€ฆ

Do you guys use Tenacity or Audacity?

Living next to one of the biggest Air Force bases in Europe can be such a pain sometimes. Imagine youโ€™re just chilling at night and then suddenly hear this alongside a barely noticeable earthquake:

Like itโ€™s not even annoying (unlike those belgiuming jets!), the best way I can describe the feeling it gives me is โ€˜oddly terrifyingโ€™.

I live near aโ€ฆ pipe factory. and for some reason I have no idea why, the sounds there are very bizarre.
Like, imagine you chilling out at 5am in your bed when this starts playing in the background:

No joking, this was the closest thing I found to the sounds I hear. Iโ€™m used to, but itโ€™s still bizarre.
